For her introduction to the solo pop world, Hailee Seinfeld broke through with an unapologetic ode to self-empowerment called “Love Myself.” Now, the 19-year-old is twisting that sentiment with an impassioned cover of Justin Bieber’s “Love Yourself.”
During an appearance on Australian radio show Hamish & Andy, Hailee offered up her version of Bieber’s Ed Sheeran-written Purpose cut. The thing about “Love Yourself” is that it sounds so sweet until you remember it’s actually quite a vengeful kiss-off -- and Hailee, accompanied by an acoustic guitarist, puts a little more oomph into her version, rather than copying JB’s soft, cooing verses.
The only question is, where does Hailee’s rendition of “Love Yourself” rank among the rest? So far, we’ve seen a NSFW cover from Halsey, a sweet serenade from former Zoey 101 star Paul Butcher, and even a dramatic reading from Morgan Freeman. Clearly, this is one of the most gloriously versatile singles of the year.
