Hosted by Katy Perry
The 2017 VMAs returned to the west coast this year at The Forum in Inglewood, California and it was truly out of this world.
The show opened with Kendrick Lamar's fiery medley of "DNA." and "HUMBLE." where he LITERALLY set the stage ablaze and had everyone singing along. Kendrick's hot streak continued when later that night "HUMBLE." won the Video of the Year award. Our host for the evening, Katy Perry, arrived on stage in a space suit floating in the air. She also shut down the VMA stage with a show stopping performance of her new song, "Swish Swish" featuring Nicki Minaj that made everyone want to pick up a basketball.
The ladies of Fifth Harmony showered the stage with an epic performance of "Down" and "Angel" featuring Gucci Mane, and Normani Kordei's jaw dropping split. They also accepted the highly coveted award for Best Pop. Miley Cyrus, a hosting alum, performed "Younger Now", taking on a whole new look and sound which made for the perfect VMA comeback.
The video for Taylor Swift's new song, "Look What You Made Me Do," was debuted and no one could stop talking about it. Almost as much as no one could stop talking about Lorde's interpretive dance to her song "Homemade Dynamite." Later that night, Logic, Alessia Cara, and Khalid sang their emotional suicide prevention anthem on stage and brought awareness to issues of mental health as well as the fight for equality.
And the performances kept coming, some of which included Ed Sheeran, Demi Lovato, DNCE, Rod Stewart, Thirty Seconds To Mars, Shawn Mendes, Gucci Mane, Julia Michaels, Alessia Cara and KYLE. P!nk accepted her Video Vanguard award with a powerful speech about individuality and self-acceptance inspired by her daughter Willow, reminding those watching to be their true selves. Then she completely transformed the VMA stage with the most badass medley of her biggest hits including "Get The Party Started", "Raise Your Glass", "So What", "Blow Me (One Last Kiss)", "F**kin' Perfect" and "Just Give Me A Reason."
