'Shadowhunters' Cast On Why Magnus Bane Is So Much More Than Glitter And Guyliner

Let Harry Shum Jr. and co. break it down for you.

Sparkly guyliner? Check. Expertly tailored threads? Most definitely. Flashy nail polish? Of course. Perfect hair? You bet! When it comes to the Shadow World, there's no one cooler than the High Warlock of Brooklyn himself, Magnus Bane.

"Shadowhunters," the small screen adaptation of Cassandra Clare's best-selling urban fantasy series, "The Mortal Instruments," doesn't premiere on ABC Family (soon to be known as Freeform) until January 12, 2016, but MTV News has all the deets on the flamboyantly beloved Downworlder, played by former "Glee" star Harry Shum Jr.

We visited the Toronto set of the anticipated new series and chatted with "Shadowhunters" stars Katherine McNamara (Clary), Dominic Sherwood (Jace), Alberto Rosende (Simon) and Shum Jr. about Magnus' natural swagger and his enigmatic charm. Unsurprisingly, everyone love Magnus.

"He has so much knowledge, and he has lived in so many different places and in so many different centuries, and there's something fascinating and beautiful about that," McNamara said. "Warlocks, they're immortal, and they have all these powers and cool things."

"They can most fluidly go back and forth between worlds," added Rosende.

As for Shum Jr.'s performance as the flamboyant warlock, his background as a dancer has been tremendously helpful.

"I think he's very cat-like," the actor said. "His movements are very calculated, but also very fluid. I think it helps that I have a dance background and that I can utilize it, but not in a way of looking like a dancer, but putting it into the character where there's a distinction between walking and moving with intentions."

Whether those intentions are entirely trustworthy are TBD. "Shadowhunters" centers on Clary, a seemingly average 18-year-old art student who uncovers her secret roots in a society of half-angel, half-human warriors known as Shadowhunters, who are tasked with ridding the world of demons. Along with her newfound Nephilim friends, Clary seeks assistance from Bane, who secretly knows a lot more about her past than he leads on.

But what Bane isn't hiding his extravagant ~aesthetic~ and love of glitter. "We can always find Harry Shum," McNamara said. "There's always a trail of glitter... There's something lovely about shedding glitter wherever you go."
