Dave Matthews Band Gives Bikes To Hometown

Group donates $4,500 to free-bike program in Charlottesville, Virginia.

Residents of Charlottesville, Virginia, will soon have free bikes to pedal around town, thanks in part to the Dave Matthews Band.

The group contributed $4,500 to its hometown's free-bikes program, which repairs and repaints old bicycles and makes them available to anyone who needs a ride. A biker can pick up one of the bright yellow two-wheelers on a city street, ride it to his or her destination and leave it for the next rider, according to city official Maurice Jones. Hard-to-remove logos will be affixed to the bikes to discourage theft, Jones said.

The program has 30 bikes so far. Similar efforts have been successful in Portland, Oregon, and Madison, Wisconsin.
