The Story Behind 'Neighbors From Hell,' Instagram's Latest Sensation

If you can't relate, then you may be one yourself.

From obnoxiously loud party animals to overbearing busybodies, all of us have dealt with a nasty neighbor at one time or another. Perhaps this is why the hilarious, cringeworthy new Instagram account Neighborsfromhell has so quickly boomed in popularity, gaining nearly 24,000 followers in a single week.

We sat down with its creator (who asked to remain anonymous because "I'm not doing this to make a name for myself"), and got the story of the account's inception and why it's so unfortunately relatable. Check it out below, along with some of the real-life nightmarish texts, which are almost too evil to be real.

MTV: How did you come up with the idea for Neighbors from Hell?

Neighbors From Hell: I've had several versions of my own terrible neighbors and I've never quite understood the reasoning behind it. These people live next to you -- how about being nice, or at least pleasant?

MTV: Are there any bad neighbors of your own who you wish you had texts from?

Neighbors From Hell: Some I do have texts from. As for the others, on one hand, sure it would be nice to have texts from some of the lunatics, but at the same time, some were so awful, I'd hate for them to even have my phone number.

MTV: Some of the texts you run are so mean. Why do you think these people have each other's phone numbers?

Neighbors From Hell: Sometimes it’s necessity. I think you can't help but give your number to immediate neighbors for so many reasons. For in case of emergency or if you think you might be friends. You have no way of knowing at first how crazy these people are.

MTV: Is it easy to find texts that align with your sense of humor?

Neighbors From Hell: I do go through a lot of them, and some text examples are terribly annoying but also boring, so I try to pick the funniest ones, because that’s the endgame. My goal is ultimately just to make people laugh.

MTV News: Did you anticipate that the account would blow up in the way that it has?

Neighbors From Hell: I didn't have any idea how quickly it would take off, but I think it just connects with people. We have all had these kinds of neighbors, and what can I say? Misery loves company! We love laughing at other people's pain, because it makes us feel better about our own.
