'Surrogates' Special: Bruce Willis' Five Best Law Enforcement Roles

Today, the sci-fi graphic novel adaptation "Surrogates"—in which Willis plays an FBI agent in a world where humans uses robotic doppelgangers in everyday life while they chill in the safety of their homes—brings the actor's total to 19 and climbing. Here are some of our favorites.

John McClane (the "Die Hard" films): Any conversation about Bruce Willis and cops must begin with McClane, whose foul-mouthed catchphrases have entered the pop culture lexicon and whose barefoot-on-broken-glass disregard for his own well-being continues to set the bar high for adrenaline-raising action flicks. Heck, it was enough to earn McClane a Greatest Movie Badasses Of All Time" nod.

Joe Hallenbeck ("The Last Boy Scout"): Co-starring Damon Wayans at the height of his "In Living Color" fame and directed by Tony Scott, "Boy Scout" is a legitimately awesome action movie. Willis plays a Secret Service agent turned private dick, who gets pulled into the shady world of high-stakes sports gambling.

The banter between Wayans and Willis ("What am I going to do with this?" ... "Point it at the bad guys and shoot!") holds its own with pithy exchanges in more revered buddy action-comedy flicks like "Lethal Weapon" and "Bad Boys." And does everybody remember the scene where Willis is getting his face bashed in and says, "If you touch me again, I'll kill you!"... And then does it?

Hartigan ("Sin City"): This noir-drenched graphic novel adaptation shows off Willis at his growly-voiced best. His cop's mission: save a little girl from a brutal rape and murder. If he dies, he dies.

Willis walks around the inky city streets hauling a revolver bigger than his head and an X-marks-the-spot scar above one eye. Things may not end well for Hartigan, but you know there's nothing in the urban landscape that can prevent him from completing his selfless task.

Jimmy Monroe ("A Couple of Dicks"): The movie doesn't even come out until 2010. When it does, it might not even be called "A Couple of Dicks." I haven't actually seen a second of footage, but this crew of key players has me thinking it'll be a buddy-comedy winner: Willis and Tracy Morgan as cops and Kevin Smith in the directing chair. Bonus points: Smith has said he wants to make "Dicks" a TNT channel classic.

"It’s a throwback to '48 Hrs.,' 'Beverly Hills Cop,' " the director told MTV News in May. "It's a buddy cop flick. It's not like, 'He’s a by-the-rules white guy and he is a jive-talking black guy, but together they’re gonna fight crime!' They just happen to be black and white and they're longtime friends."

Tom Hardy ("Striking Distance"): Okay, okay, this is a pretty crappy movie. But it's making the list because in "Striking Distance," Willis manages to kick some serious ass as a freaking boat cop! Oh, and did I mention his partner is a pre-"Sex and the City" Sarah Jessica Parker? What about how they take time out from chasing a murderer to bump uglies on a boat? The most important reason, though, has to be that the trailer includes the following epic tagline: "They should have never put him in the water if they didn't want him to make waves!"
