Pretenders singer/guitarist Chrissie Hynde was arraigned on charges of criminal mischief in the fourth degree Friday (March 10), following her arrest Thursday afternoon during an animal-rights demonstration at a Gap clothing store in New York. Hynde and three other supporters of the animal-rights organization People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals allegedly ripped up leather jackets and tore clothing off mannequins to protest what they said was the Gap's use of leather from illegally slaughtered cows in India. The singer, who was released Friday morning, is scheduled to appear April 20 in Manhattan Criminal Court. She faces up to a $1,000 fine and one year in prison if convicted, a spokesperson for the Manhattan district attorney said. The Pretenders will play New York's Roseland Ballroom on Friday. A PETA spokesperson could not be reached by press time.
