This weekend, thousands of students across the country celebrated Martin Luther King Day by viewing the Oscar-nominated film "Selma" -- for free.

In honor of MLK Day, more than 275,000 free tickets to "Selma" were made available to middle and high school students in 24 cities, and over the three-day weekend, teachers, students, and parents flocked to theaters to participate in the #SelmaForStudents movement. For some, it was educational, and for others, an emotional experience. Regardless, we couldn't think of a better way to honor Dr. King's legacy.

"Selma" chronicles the horrific events leading up to Martin Luther King, Jr.'s historic march from Selma to Montgomery, Alabama, and the subsequent passage of the 1965 Voting Rights Act -- which prohibited racial discrimination in voting.

While students around the U.S. headed to the movies for a free viewing of "Selma," the "Selma" cast -- including director Ava DuVernay, David Oyelowo, Common, and Oprah Winfrey -- headed to Selma, Alabama to participate in a commemorative march to the Edmund Pettus Bridge on January 18. Following the march, the cast gathered for a special screening for Selma residents.

The White House also hosted a screening of "Selma" on January 16 for “a very small group,” including “Selma” cast and crew members, and President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama. Here's hoping Sasha and Malia were invited too. If not, they could have joined the thousands of students who saw "Selma" for free.
