Screaming Lord Sutch, '60s Shock-Rock Pioneer, Found Dead

Flamboyant '60s rock star Screaming Lord Sutch has been found dead in England, apparently by his own hand.

The BBC is reporting that Sutch's body was discovered at his home in London after police responded to an emergency call regarding a man found hanging.

According to Britain's "New Musical Express," Sutch had been suffering from depression since the death of his mother two years ago.

David Sutch took the Screaming Lord moniker in the pre-Beatles sixties and recorded solo and with his early band, The Savages, which also featured Deep Purple's Ritchie Blackmore and famed session player Nicky Hopkins. Sutch also played with the likes of Jimmy Page, John Bonham, Jeff Beck, Keith Moon, and Noel Redding. The leopard-clad Sutch was also considered to be the first rock star to sport seriously long hair.

He was also one of the forerunners of horror-inspired shock rock. His early records included "Jack The Ripper," "I'm A Hog For You Baby," and "'Til The Following Night." His stage

show was littered with coffins, knives, and other Goth props.

Although he wasn't a true Lord, he founded the Teenage Party (National Youth Party) in 1963, which later became the Official Monster Raving Loony Party. Sutch subsequently became Britain's longest-serving political leader, even though he never once won an election in his more than 40 bids for Parliament.

The BBC says that until recently, Sutch still performed up to 250 concerts a year throughout Europe and that he had planned to run for mayor of London.

Sutch was 58.
