Viola Davis’ Moving Speech Shows Why We Need To Support Sexual Assault Victims

'Her whole life could have been different,' Davis says about her sister.

Viola Davis shared the personal story of her sister -- who was sexually assaulted at just 8-years-old -- in an incredibly emotional speech at an LA event benefitting Stuart House, a non-profit that partners with The Rape Foundation to support survivors and victims of childhood sexual assault.

The "How To Get Away With Murder" star told the crowd how the assault forever changed her sister's life and how she desperately wishes there was a program like Stuart House that could've supported her. She described in heart-breaking detail the day that her sister walked to the corner store, how she came home in tears to her mother and how the anger and outrage they all felt was met with indifference.

"And then from there, a precocious, very intelligent, very creative child grew up to be frail, angry, a drug addict by the time she was 20," Davis said at Tuesday's event. “Six children, all of which have been taken by social services. A prostitute. An IV drug user."

In a particularly emotional moment, Davis described the things she prayed for when she prayed for her sister. She said she just wished there had been a hand up for her, rather than the system that failed her and so many others.

“I wish she had had the Stuart House to throw her a rope," Davis said. "Because her whole life could have been different."

"And in my vision, and in my dreams, when I pray for my sister . . . you pray in general terms. You pray that she finds peace and love and happiness, she gets off drugs. And then of course you open your eyes, and you’re like, she’s still on the streets.”
