Selena Gomez And Justin Bieber's 2011 EMA Couple Style Proves Opposites Attract

Despite the tumultuous relationship-testing events of late, we here at MTV Style have the utmost faith in America's wonder couple-behbehs: Selena Gomez and Justin Bieber. Though not photographed together AT the 2011 EMA last night in Belfast, they were seen holding hands en route to a dinner after the big event for which Sel played host. Biebs let his girl shine on her own on her big day, as the duo played up their divergent personal styles more rather than going H.A.M. with the matchy-poo-ness à la black on black on black at the 2011 VMAs. Both performers in their own right, Selena and Justin both took to the stage during the award show, each clad in signature personal steeze.
As is customary, nay expected of Miss Gomez, girl was decked out in sequins to the eyeballs. Sel wore the long-sleeved shimmering purple number, in all its hot pants glory, with a pair of deliciously suede black knee-high boots and her hair in a soft half-up-half-down 'do—a kind of Nancy Sinatra meets glam-rock look that we're totally loving. The Biebs, on the other hand, went way futuristic with bold white details, hard lines, and more of that leather badassery we're seeing him wield lately. Hardly a stationary performer, Bieber's performance ensemble was optimized for movement with easy fit separates like black jeans, sneakers, and this seemingly Keith Haring-inspired jacket.

Their anti-coordination, however, was not more apparent than on the red carpet. We're sure that as the event's MC, Selena felt an obligation to dress to the nines. This Marchesa mini ball gown is flirty but also professional (in a I'm-a-triple-threat-international-superstar kind of way), and clearly just straight up fierce. While Selena certainly doesn't look overly formal, side-by-side with the ensemble in which Justin walked the red carpet, girl definitely looks like she's going to a different event. One with a chocolate fountain. And little plates of skewers stacked with decadent meats wrapped in spinach and fromage. Bieber's outfit, however, could also be a great option for the first day of school. Or picture day!
That's not to say that he looks bad or is underdressed or whatever (because he's not). The beauty of the European Music Awards is that the show is so chill, so FUN that you can wear whatever the heck you want sans Judgey McJudgerson's shrew index finger pointed in your face. Bieber really does look camera-ready in this large-print plaid button up with the tabbed collar peeking over the thin knit sweater's crew neck. The crisp lines of his top half and immaculate kicks balance the slouchy folds of his slate jeans, pulling the outfit together for a look that's both relaxed AND polished. We're just saying the kids don't match.
