Evan Rachel Wood is speaking out about her personal experience with sexual assault, something far too familiar for her Westworld character. Earlier this month, Wood talked to Rolling Stone about life in the spotlight and opened up about some dark topics from her past.

"I have been raped. By a significant other while we were together, and on a separate occasion, by the owner of a bar," Wood wrote in an email to the story's reporter, which was included in the interview. On Monday (November 28), Wood posted her full email statement on Twitter so that fans could read her entire account.

Wood admitted to not initially offering more details because she didn't want the article to become a "sob story." And, like so many survivors of sexual assault, she was afraid people wouldn't believe her. But she later changed her mind thanks to the "blatant bigotry and sexism" of today's society.

"I don't believe we live in a time where people can stay silent any longer. I can't certainly can't," she wrote. "The first time I was unsure that if it was done by a partner it was still in fact rape, until [it was] too late. Also who would believe me. And the second time, I thought it was my fault and that I should have fought back more, but I was scared."

Both encounters happened before she attempted suicide at age 22, an experience she called "the best-worst thing that ever happened to [her] 'Cause it did not work." At the time, she was still figuring out her sexuality — she came out as bisexual in 2011 — and her on-and-off relationship with Marilyn Manson. Her son with actor Jamie Bell, born in 2013, "changed everything" and helped her find some peace.

"The pressure to just get over it already should be lifted," Wood continued. "[It's] not that you can't get over it, [it's] just that you are never the same, or maybe I just haven't gotten there yet."
