David Goyer Departs 'FlashForward' As Showrunner, No Replacement Announced

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Goyer is stepping away from his role as the showrunner of "FlashForward." While he'll still be "involved" with the series, an unidentified talent will take over the hands-on job.

"As my feature projects have started ramping up again, I felt I was being pulled in too many directions," Goyer said in a statement. "I'm proud of the show and excited about the relaunch. It's in great hands."

Goyer's departure from the showrunner position isn't a great sign for "FlashForward," a series that's already nursing several leaks in the ship. Aside from Guggenheim and now Goyer's departure, "FlashForward" experienced a sudden and lengthy delay as ordered by ABC back in December. The show's events were meant to coincide with an episode's planned air date, but the delayed comeback has effectively dashed that hope.

On the business side of things, "FlashForward" has lost a significant chunk of the 12.4 million viewers that tuned in for the series premiere. Before the break, the show's DVR ratings were still strong.

Still, it's not an ideal situation for ABC and "FlashForward." Goyer was a big name with big credits under his belt and plenty of talent to back it up. His hands-on involvement with the show's story progression and character development was one of the reasons that I enjoyed the series so much.

Now, with five episodes left to shoot and a replacement yet to be announced, Goyer's departure from the showrunner role has me a bit worried, particularly given the show's ratings decline and lengthy absence from the airwaves. It's encouraging that he plans to stay involved, but the series will have some things to prove after it is back on the air. It'll be interesting to see who ABC taps to replace Goyer and what the new blood brings to the dynamics of the series.
