Ingrid Michaelson Covering Taylor Swift's 'Clean' Will Heal Your Broken Heart

Apparently, Ingrid even wanted the song for her own new album... but Taylor couldn't give it up.

Billboard threw their annual Women in Music event on Friday (December 12) and the outpouring of incredible happenings from the day seems to know no bounds. First, there was the fact that Taylor Swift, Beyonce and Charli XCX were like, literally having lunch together.... and then Aretha Franklin herself sang happy birthday to Tay Tay.

But now it's just emerged that during the super special girl power event, Ingrid Michaelson also performed a special cover of Taylor Swift's song "Clean" to honor the singer who earned Billboard's Women of the Year award.

Ingrid also talks about hanging out in Taylor's apartment and listening to the record before it came out, but of course, we already knew they were friends. Remember when they hung out at Summerstage earlier this year?

But "Clean" is a fitting choice for Michaelson, because the song's subdued vibes and elegant strings are almost more reminiscent of her own work than Taylor's usual sound. The track is one of the best on 1989, discussing a hurtful, toxic relationship that needed to be washed away like a stain, and ending on the positive, light note of feeling clean. Instead of blaming herself or the guy like some break up anthems, the song takes a larger, wiser perspective on love and loss—and Ingrid perfectly captures all those emotions.

"This one song was so beautiful that I begged her to send it to me... and she said no," Michaelson revealed before beginning her performance. "As soon as it came out I just listened to it over and over again and I think it shows such depth of writing."
