Memory of 'Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind' Now More Vivid on Blu-ray

We have all been with someone we'd rather forget or loved someone and lost, but usually there is some memory of the person we'd like to keep with us even if it hurts to remember. This is the conundrum faced by Jim Carrey and Kate Winslet in this bizarre and widely celebrated 2004 romantic fantasy directed by Michel Gondry, "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind," which hits Blu-ray today.

Introverted Joel (Carrey) and wacky free spirit Clementine (Winslet)—whose whims change as often as her hair color—strike up a relationship on a Long Island railroad train despite having little in common. The truth is that the two are former lovers that had a tumultuous relationship complicated by the fact the Clementine impulsively hired a company named Lacuna, Inc. to erase all memories of Joel from her brain.

We learn that Joel then went in for the same procedure, but the more aggressively the Lacuna team (including Kirsten Dunst and Mark Ruffalo) attempts to eradicate his memories of Clementine the more Joel retreats deeper and deeper into his subconscious to keep her memory alive. Meanwhile, a Lacuna worker (Elijah Wood) is exploiting the details of Joel's case to make a move on Clementine, but she has a nagging feeling that something is terribly wrong and that she is being manipulated.

Can Joel and Clementine start a fresh relationship with each other even though they have tried before, failed and then forgot? They have as good a shot as the rest of us as we traverse the treacherous waters of dating in the new millennium. We haven't yet reached the point where people will basically lobotomize themselves to erase painful memories, but we do alert everyone to our current relationship status with an absentminded click of the button on Facebook—one second we're single, the next we're "in a relationship," and with another click the world will know "it's complicated."

The truth is that all relationships are complicated and usually have something worth remembering, so you'll find yourself cheering Joel on while he is unconscious as he pulls Clementine into embarrassing childhood recollections in an attempt to bury her away from the memory assassins employed by Lacuna, Inc. Forget about the DVD and now-defunct HD DVD edition of "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind"—this Blu-ray debut is how you'll want to remember this unforgettable, visually fantastic love story.

Extras! include commentary with Gondry and writer Charlie Kaufman, a Lacuna infomercial, interviews with Carrey and Winslet, behind-the-scenes featurettes, and the Polyphonic Spree's music video "Light & Day."
