11 People Who Didn't Put Up With Body And Makeup Shamers In 2015

???

2015 will go down in history as the year of the clap back. Celebrities, YouTubers, and more took advantage of social media to stick it to critics who attacked their bodies or decision to wear (or not to wear) makeup. For every mean comment on Instagram or snarky video on YouTube, there was a person on the other end not putting up with it and speaking out. Let us look back on all our personal heroes for standing up for themselves and inspiring others.

Zendaya

Zendaya didn't let anyone get away with anything this year. In addition to standing up for rocking locs at the Oscars, she also called out a tweet by Manstagram that mocked a photo showing Beauty vlogger Shannon Harris with and without makeup that said, "This is why our first date is running a mile around the track to see if you sweat the makeup off." Zendaya replied to the tweet and shut the whole thing down saying, "that awkward moment when this tweet is irrelevant cause she's slaying both ways #wannaborrowmyglasses."

Not only does she stand up for others, but she's got her own back as well. Back when she covered Modeliste Magazine, her already slender figure was slimmed down even more due to some liberal and excessive photoshop. Zendaya went ahead and published the unretouched photos to her Instagram and said "...These are the things that make women self conscious, that create the unrealistic ideals of beauty that we have. Anyone who knows who I am knows I stand for honest and pure self love. So I took it upon myself to release the real pic (right side) and I love it??"

NikkiTutorials

Beauty YouTuber NikkiTutorials knows what she's doing when it comes to makeup, and she's not ashamed of any of it. That's why when she became the target of makeup shamers, she posted a video with half of her face done up in makeup and the other half completely bare to show her viewers that makeup is fun and transformative.

“I’ve been noticing a lot lately that girls have been almost ashamed to say that they love makeup,” she said in the video. “’Cause nowadays, when you say you love makeup, [people think] you either do it because you want to look good for boys, you do it because you’re insecure, or you do it because you don’t love yourself.”

Gigi Hadid

Gigi Hadid had an insane, packed year doing everything from directing music videos to walking the Victoria's Secret runway. Despite all her success, she still wasn't immune to the haters, who called out her figure for not being "right" for the runway. Gigi took to Instagram to let her body shamers know that she loves her body and that she's not going anywhere. We're looking forward to seeing much more from her in 2016.

Vin Diesel

Yup, even dudes have to deal with body shamers, too. And that includes notoriously buff Vin Diesel. After being called out for his "dad bod" when he was photographed shirtless, Vin Diesel called out his critiques to let them know that he loves his dad bod, thanks. He said, "It is amazing the response from the journalists who I have been talking to for the last two days in New York. Today one wanted to see the dad bod. Haha. I am wondering if I should show the picture... Body-shaming is always wrong! What do you think?" We agree, Vin.

Selena Gomez

2015 was arguably Selena Gomez's biggest year with the release of her latest album "Revival." But for whatever reason she had to deal with people going out of their way to critique her body. But when you're Selena Gomez, you don't succumb to your haters, but instead post a picture of yourself lounging in a swimsuit along with the caption "I love being happy with me yall #theresmoretolove ?"

Meghan Tonjes

2015 was the year that Nicole Arbour's "Dear Fat People" video went viral for her insensitive and mean comments like "Fat shaming is not a thing. Fat people made that up." Luckily there are people like YouTuber Meghan Tonjes who shut down whatever sort of warped "bomb of truth" she was dropping to encourage people to be "healthier."

In a video response to "Dear Fat People" Meghan said, "I know what it’s like to sit there as a teenage girl and see something like that and … it doesn’t have the effect that people like this assume it does, where it’s like, 'Oh, it just motivates me to go and lose weight.' To plant a seed of change and to plant a seed of positivity and growth, but to plant it in soil that’s based in complete hatred of yourself ... nothing’s ever gonna happen."

Kelly Clarkson

Despite being one of pop's biggest talents, Kelly Clarkson always seems to be in the headlines for people attacking her appearance. Though it occasionally gets to her, she's learned how to ignore her haters. During an appearance on "Ellen" she said, "It’s like, you just are who you are. We are who we are — whatever size. It doesn’t mean that we’re gonna be that forever. That’s the thing! Sometimes we’re more fit. Like, especially me. I’m such a creative person that I yo-yo. Sometimes I’m more fit and I get into kickboxing hardcore. And then sometimes I don’t and I’m like, 'I’d rather have wine.'"

My Pale Skin

Beauty blogger Em Ford aka My Pale Skin became fed up with the unrealistic beauty standards that we're constantly overwhelmed with, so she posted a photo of herself to Instagram to let everyone know that there's usually more than meets the eye. She said, "I wasted so many years of my life chasing perfection, and you know what I found? A hollow empty shell of myself when I looked in the mirror. ????Perfection isn't real, but progress is."

After receiving thousands of messages from people who suffered from acne or issues with confidence and related to her story, she posted a video of herself putting on makeup called "You Look Disgusting" that ended up going viral. It created a discussion around the "false images of perfection" that we see daily, especially on social media.

Serena Williams

It's absurd to think that someone as talented and fit as Serena Williams would have to face body shamers. She defended her athletic body on "Good Morning America" saying, "I've been like this my whole life, and I embrace me and I love how I look. I love that I am a full woman, and I'm strong and I'm powerful and I'm beautiful at the same time. And there's nothing wrong with that."

Bella DeLune

After beauty blogger Bella DeLune got fed up with being called "a clown" repeatedly on social media, she decided to have a little fun with her criticism by posting a video to Instagram that showed her transforming clown-inspired makeup into contoured perfection. She went on to post a longer tutorial video of the look on YouTube and explained her inspiration behind it.

"Even though you don’t need this amount of makeup or any makeup at all to feel or look beautiful, let’s face it–makeup is fun, and it’s a way of expressing yourself. Personally, I can’t even tell you how many times I’ve been called a clown–and many other names–and have been hated on because of the way I use this art form.” Adding, “It’s just kind of to say that, you know what? Negativity can be around us all the time, but guess what? I can just literally blend it away.”

Tess Holliday

2015 was a great year for Tess Holliday. She landed a campaign with H&M and the cover of People magazine, where she preached the importance of body positivity. “There is no one way to be a woman, or to be beautiful. We all deserve a place. I believe this with all my heart," she told the mag. "While modeling is my career and my family is vitally important to me, I have this passion inside of me to help other women feel confident and comfortable in their bodies, regardless of their size or what society tells them is beautiful. It’s like a calling."
