MTV Geek's Fall Preview: Our Most Anticipated Graphic Novels
This Autumn not only brings an amazing assortment of new comic books, but an equally incredible array of bookshelf-worthy original works and collected editions (for those who like their sequential art in sturdier formats). So following up on the list of our 10 Most Anticipated New Comics, I also want to offer up my list of Fall's Half-Dozen Most Anticipated Graphic Novels!
Century West (by Howard Chaykin, published by Image Comics)
In stores: September 11th
After seeing print in Europe some years ago, Image Comics is steeping up to present the first American publication of Howard Chaykin's tale of the Old West colliding with Hollywood in the early years of the 20th century – and, as with all things Chaykin, it's bound to be packed with boundary-pushing, bodice-ripping, page-turning action.
Morning Glories (Deluxe HC Edition) Volume 2 (by Nick Spencer and Joe Eisma, published by Image Comics)
In stores: September 18th
The second volume of Image's hardcover Morning Glories collections lives up to the lofty standard established by the first, collecting issues 13-25 of Nick Spencer and Joe Eisma's high-drama supernatural boarding school thriller with added sketches, cover galleries, character designs, and other special delights!
Fairy Tale Comics (by various artists, published by First Second)
In stores: September 25th
Classic fairy tales, adapted into comic form by some of the medium's best artists. It's a brilliantly simple idea for a graphic novel, and First Second have assembled a breathtaking group of creators – Raina Telgemeier, Craig Thompson, Ramona Fradon, David Mazzucchelli, Emily Carroll, Brett Helquist, Los Bros. Hernandez, and a number of other notables reinterpret familiar stories in their own unique styles, and pure magic results.
Battling Boy (by Paul Pope, published by First Second)
In stores: October 9th
Paul Pope's return to long-form stories is the story of a twelve-year-old that stands up to rampaging monsters and becomes the champion of his people. It's also probably the single most fun book of the fall; an exhilarating action-packed tale of science-fictional superheroics.
The Black Beetle Volume 1: No Way Out (by Francesco Francavilla, published by Dark Horse)
In stores: October 16th
The Black Beetle is Francesco Fracavilla's homage to classic pulp heroes, but it's also much more than that… It's a exciting and atmospheric adventure story, full of hard-bitten dialogue and breathtaking art. And Dark Horse's collection of the first Black Beetle miniseries ups the ante by including a heaping helping of bonus materials: pin-ups, sketches, and extra behind-the-scenes goodies!
The 5th Beatle (by Vivek J. Tiwary and Andrew Robinson with Kyle Baker, published by Dark Horse)
In stores: November 19th
Vivek J. Tiwary and Andrew Robinson's long-awaited graphic novel biography of Beatles manager Brian Epstein is both a spectacular use of the comics medium, and a brilliant work of historical journalism. Tiwary has spent the better part of two decades researching Epstein's life, interviewing his family and friends, and building the framework for this story – and when combined with the visual splendor of Robinson's fully-painted art (and a cartoon interlude by the great Kyle Baker), the result is a thought-provoking and deeply compelling book that stands among the great works of the comics medium.
