Battling Boy (by Paul Pope, published by First Second)

In stores: October 9th

Paul Pope's return to long-form stories is the story of a twelve-year-old that stands up to rampaging monsters and becomes the champion of his people. It's also probably the single most fun book of the fall; an exhilarating action-packed tale of science-fictional superheroics.

MTVG-BlackBeetle

The Black Beetle Volume 1: No Way Out (by Francesco Francavilla, published by Dark Horse)

In stores: October 16th

The Black Beetle is Francesco Fracavilla's homage to classic pulp heroes, but it's also much more than that…  It's a exciting and atmospheric adventure story, full of hard-bitten dialogue and breathtaking art.  And Dark Horse's collection of the first Black Beetle miniseries ups the ante by including a heaping helping of bonus materials: pin-ups, sketches, and extra behind-the-scenes goodies!

MTVG-5thBeatle

The 5th Beatle (by Vivek J. Tiwary and Andrew Robinson with Kyle Baker, published by Dark Horse)

In stores: November 19th

Vivek J. Tiwary and Andrew Robinson's long-awaited graphic novel biography of Beatles manager Brian Epstein is both a spectacular use of the comics medium, and a brilliant work of historical journalism.  Tiwary has spent the better part of two decades researching Epstein's life, interviewing his family and friends, and building the framework for this story – and when combined with the visual splendor of Robinson's fully-painted art (and a cartoon interlude by the great Kyle Baker), the result is a thought-provoking and deeply compelling book that stands among the great works of the comics medium.
