Did Marvel Just Confirm The New Spider-Man's Secret Identity?

We don't know how to quit you, Peter Parker.

Who is the new Spider-Man? That's the pressing question on a lot of Marvel fans' minds, as the friendly neighborhood web-spinner prepares to make his Marvel Cinematic Universe debut.

But the question extends beyond who will play the new Spider-Man; it's also a question of which version of Spider-Man we'll see in the movie. There has been a lot of talk among fans about Marvel ditching Peter Parker and moving forward with Miles Morales, the Spider-Man of the Ultimate Comics universe... but it seems that talk won't translate to reality.

Over the weekend, Marvel's Chief Creative Officer Joe Quesada answered a fan's question about 2017's upcoming "Spider-Man" movie, and what it's going to take to make the Marvel Studios version of Spidey "the best that it can be." Quesada's response seems to answer one big mystery about the MCU Spider-Man:

"The trick to making any incarnation of Spider-Man great, whether comics, animation or film is Peter Parker. Get Peter’s character right and  the rest falls into place."

Not a lot of room for interpretation there, right? If we take Quesada at face value — and there's no reason we shouldn't, given his prominent position at Marvel — then the next big-screen Spider-Man will be Peter Parker, not Miles Morales. Not to say that there isn't a place at the table for Miles, in the near or distant future, but it certainly sounds like Peter will be the central focus of the 2017 film.

Now that we know which version of Spider-Man we'll see under the mask, the question remains: Who will play Peter Parker? Rumors persist that Marvel wants a young, teenage actor to play the character, marking a pretty big departure from the Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield eras. If that's the case, then it's likely that the new Spider-Man will be an unknown up-and-comer — but in the event Marvel needs some suggestions, we have plenty of picks to swing their way.

The new "Spider-Man" movie arrives on July 28, 2017, with the character expected to debut in an earlier Marvel movie.
