13 Things Zenon Got Right About The 21st Century

She was FaceTiming wayyy before Steve Jobs was.

In 1999 Disney Channel #blessed us all with "Zenon: Girl of the 21st Century," an original movie that was literally out of this world. Zenon Kar was just your average 13-year-old who fought with her parents, fangirled over her favorite pop star, didn't pay attention in class -- oh, and lived in outer space in the year 2049. Casual.

Fortunately, we don't need to wait another 35 years to get our hands on all the cool futuristic stuff mentioned in "Zenon" and its two subsequent sequels. We're just about 15 years into the 21st century now, and some of Zenon's predictions for the future have already come true. Here's what she got right so far.

We can talk to people face-to-face through a screen

facetime

When she lived in outer space, Zenon used her iPad Zap Pad to visually call her boyfriend, Greg, who lived on planet Earth. Without the invention of a front-facing camera, there's no way anyone could sustain that mega-long-distance relationship.

Holograms exist

...and the ones we've seen so far in the 21st century -- like Tupac Shakur's 2012 Coachella performance and Gorillaz at the 2005 MTV Europe Music Awards -- are way more exciting than Zenon's holographic school teacher.

Famous songs repeat the same words over and over again

Pop sensation Proto Zoa would have gotten along with Taylor Swift. As much as we're obsessed with 1989, we listened to "Shake It Off" and "Welcome To New York" exactly one time each before we had both choruses memorized. It's not very hard to remember lyrics when they're just the same words sung to different notes.

Skintight leggings are a wardrobe staple

This colorful pic of Zenon and her BFF Nebula is basically an American Apparel ad waiting to happen. Most legging-obsessed girls in the 21st century prefer black pairs, of course -- but brightly-colored and patterned leggings are definitely a bold trend in any Forever 21 store.

The first concert in space was about to happen...

...but was ultimately delayed due to safety concerns. Back in 2013, Lady Gaga confirmed to Vanity Fair that she'd be the first singer to perform in space. There were even rumors that she would wed her boyfriend Taylor Kinney while floating around.

The big concert was set to happen in 2015 as part of Zero G Colony, a three-day music festival at Spaceport America -- which is basically an airport for outer space -- in New Mexico. Sadly, a Virgin Galactic pilot was killed when a spaceship similar to the one Gaga was planning on taking exploded last October. Gaga's intergalactic concert is indefinitely delayed while investigators try to figure out what led to the deadly explosion.

Teens have really weird lingo

When we're saying crazy stuff like "FOMO" and "twerk" and "selfie" in our everyday language, the term "zetus lapetus" suddenly doesn't seem so weird anymore.

The 2000s were all about sequins

Did Limited Too sell anything that didn't have at least one sequin on it somewhere?

Everything goes to sh-- without computers

In the trilogy's first movie, a greedy villain tries to destroy Zenon's home -- a spaceship orbiting the Earth -- by infecting all the computers on board with a virus. Since the computers controlled the entire spaceship, everyone inside was in serious danger when the virus infected all their technology.

Similarly, our society today is almost completely reliant on computers -- if something were to wipe out all the servers in the entire world, there would be catastrophic consequences.

When you can't deal with your hair, you put it in a messy bun

This classic hairstyle is truly timeless. Nothing screams "IDGAF" like a messy bun.

Zenon predicted Miley Cyrus' 2013 VMAs look...

Witty Tumblr folk were quick to point out the similarities between Zenon and Miley Cyrus at the 2013 VMAs. Who do you think wore it better?

Maybe someday Austin will be lucky enough to point at a camera in outer space.

Parents are more overprotective than ever before

tumblr_mf5kjmYH8R1qbt9k4o1_1280

When Zenon's parents got worried about her troublemaking in outer space, they grounded her just like normal parents do -- except they literally grounded her ON EARTH. Overprotective parents have always been around, granted, but they're fiercer than ever now that social media, sexts and drugs that look like candy exist. Whether it's 2014 or 2049, parents are just trying to do what's best for their kids.

Teen angst will always be a thing
