Even though Benedict Cumberbatch's "Star Trek Into Darkness" character has been at the center of most trailers and previews for the sci-fi sequel, we still know essentially nothing about the guy. He's got some very impressive cheekbones and he doesn't like the Starfleet, but that's about it.

Now, a new international trailer for "Star Trek Into Darkness" (via iTunes) finally sheds some light on what this guy is up to and why Young Captain Kirk wants to bring him down.

The preview marks the first appearance of Peter Weller's character, a higher-up in Starfleet who describes Cumberbatch's John Harrison as one of the organization's "top agents." That isn't quite a revelation since we've spied the Starfleet logo on some of Harrison's clothes, but thanks to more ominous voiceover work from the character, we know that the Starfleet "commanders have committed a crime that [he] cannot forgive."

Once the preview establishes a motive — albeit an infuriatingly vague one — the trailer focuses on the terrorist attacks that follow, including a bombing in futuristic London and a fly-by shooting on Starfleet HQ.

Whether Harrison ends up being Khan remains to be seen, but he's clearly shaping up to be a formidable villain to Kirk, Spock and the rest of the crew in his own right. The trailer gives the viewer a sense that Harrison will almost be a version of Cumberbatch's Sherlock Holmes gone very, very bad. "I am better," he tells Kirk, who asks "At what." "Everything," he replies.

Everything about Cumberbatch's character will (hopefully) be revealed when "Star Trek Into Darkness" opens in theaters on May 17.
