Santana Leads List of Billboard Nominees

Carlos Santana's namesake band continues its spectacular — almost Supernatural — comeback, topping the list of nominees for Tuesday's 11th annual Billboard Music Awards with six nominations, including one for Artist of the Year.

'NSYNC, Faith Hill, Creed, Ricky Martin, Destiny's Child, Dixie Chicks, Mystikal and 3 Doors Down will perform at the ceremony, to be held Tuesday at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas and broadcast live at 8 p.m. (ET) on the Fox Network.

Presenters will include Britney Spears, 98 Degrees, Lil' Bow Wow, Baha Men, Joe, Eve, Mandy Moore, BBMak, Pink, Toni Braxton, Matchbox Twenty's Rob Thomas, Matt Scannell of Vertical Horizon, Dido, Brian McKnight, Jessica Simpson, Son By Four, Carnie Wilson, "Almost Famous" star Patrick Fugit and skateboarding star Tony Hawk.

No host had been announced at press time. Additional presenters and award contenders will be announced in the week before the ceremony, according

to Fox Networks spokesman Jason Clarke.

Santana's other nominations are for Hot 100 Singles Artist of the Year, Albums Artist of the Year, two nominations for Hot 100 Single of the Year ("Smooth" and "Maria Maria") and a nod for Album of the Year (Supernatural). Faith Hill is second, with five nominations. Competing with Santana for Artist of the Year are *NSync (three nominations) Christina Aguilera (three nominations) and Destiny's Child (two nominations).

Should bandleader Carlos Santana triumph at the Billboard Awards as he did at the Grammy Awards in February, it will complete the success story of his band's comeback record, Supernatural, which so far has sold 13 million copies.

Other nominees include Eminem (three nominations, including Album of the Year), Sisqó (three nominations, including R&B/Hip-Hop Artist of the Year), Britney Spears (three nominations, including Female Artist of the Year), DMX (two nominations, including R&B/Hip-Hop

Artist of the Year), Metallica (three nominations, including two apiece for Rock Track of the Year) and Pink (two nominations, including Best New Artist).

Randy Newman will receive the Century Award, an honor bestowed on distinguished artists, presented by ex-Eagle Don Henley. Past recipients include Joni Mitchell and George Harrison.

Unlike the Grammy Awards, which are voted on by members of the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences and which use criteria based on artistic merit, Billboard determines its awards based on the findings of its year-end charts, which are determined by statistics regarding radio airplay and record sales. Therefore, recipients ofBillboard awards are the artists that sold the most records in their given genre.
