Jazz Beat: Clifford Brown, Junior Mance, Miles Davis ...

Late trumpeter Clifford Brown will be the subject of a Lincoln Center lecture by writer Nick Catalono.

Jazz at Lincoln Center's 2000–2001 Penthouse series gets under way next month with three events. Nick Catalono, author of "Clifford Brown: The Life and Art of the Legendary Jazz Trumpeter," will give a talk called "I Remember Clifford" on Sept. 26. Joining Catalono will be saxophonists Teddy Edwards and Harold Land, both of whom played with Brown. Next up, pianist Junior Mance will deliver a rare solo recital Oct. 5–7 — just days before his 72nd birthday, Oct. 10. Then the duets crank up with a pair of twosomes Oct. 13–17. Guitarist Jim Hall and bassist Scott Colley will take the stage, followed by saxophonist Joe Lovano and pianist Gonzalo Rubalcaba. It's all at the Stanley H. Kaplan Penthouse. Those who read the magnificent 1997 biography "Space Is the Place: The Life and Times of Sun Ra" no doubt have had their appetites whetted for more of writer John Szwed's work. Now there's a new taste: "Jazz 101: A Complete Guide to Learning and Loving Jazz" (Hyperion). But the main course from Szwed, who teaches anthropology at Yale University, will arrive next summer when he serves up a bio of Miles Davis, to be published by Simon & Schuster. ...

PBS will air an "American Masters" documentary on actor and noted jazz buff Clint Eastwood next month, and when the DVD of the show is released next year, its soundtrack will be an original suite featuring saxophonist Joshua Redman. ...

Soprano saxophone great Steve Lacy is in the midst of a mini-tour of the United States, performing in various configurations. On Friday (Aug. 25) he will play on an Orrin Keepnews-produced recording session of drummer Anthony Brown's Asian American Orchestra, after which Lacy will perform a duo with his vocalist wife Irene Aebi at the Cubberley Community Center in Palo Alto, Calif. On Sept. 3 he performs at the Chicago Jazz Festival with the 10-piece Monk All Stars, including saxophonist Johnny Griffin and drummer Ben Riley, who played with Thelonious Monk. ...

On Sept. 3 New York's Knitting Factory is presenting a "Christ A-Go-Go Festival" that, according to a KF press release, will be "an experimental music and art festival celebrating and showcasing the oft-overlooked creative forces at work in the Christian church." Charles Gayle — who pretty much channels Jesus through his saxophone — will perform, as will Therefore, White Trash Inc., Jai Agnish and Soul-Junk. ... The day after that show soprano saxophone icon Steve Lacy performs at the Knitting Factory with his vocalist wife Irene Aebi. ...

Two forthcoming CDs by late saxophonists Stan Getz and Sonny Stitt draw from the extensive Left Bank Jazz Society vaults that are full of never-released material. On Sept. 26, Label M will issue Getz's My Foolish Heart and Stitt's Just the Way It Was — both recorded live at Baltimore's Famous Ballroom in the early '70s. The Getz date features Richie Beirach on piano, Dave Holland on bass and Jack DeJohnette on drums. Stitt's band is Don Patterson on organ and Billy James on drums.
