Katy Perry Admits She Didn't Feel Pretty 'Without Makeup' Until Russell Brand Came Along

Does Katy Perry have multiple personalities? We’ve been seeing the “California Gurls” singer a lot recently -- usually scantily clad for hot-button cover stories or in outrageous candy-themed outfits for her videos -- which is why it’s so surprising to see her fully dressed in a conventional pink number for Seventeen’s back-to-school issue. It’s like seeing Lady Gaga wearing jeans and a T-shirt!

Instead of creating controversy with a discussion of, say, sex and religion, Katy kept the interview focused on her fiancé, comedian/actor Russell Brand. According to an unmistakably in love Katy, Russell taught her to avoid judging a person by his reputation and how to love herself.

"I think he taught me a lot about inner beauty and confidence in myself,” she confessed to the magazine. “I don't really feel pretty ever, without makeup. I feel ugly. And so I would have to sleep with makeup on, or feel ugly and gross. He looks beyond all of that, which is such a win, because I've never felt that with anybody. He’s in love with the person inside of me, and the outside of me is just a bonus.”

She also admits to having a preconceived perception of the “Get Him to the Greek” wild man before meeting him in person. “[Russell] changed my mind about him the moment I met him,” she explained. “I said, ‘You are a better person than how you are portrayed.’” And the rest is history!

Russell even challenges the pop star to reconcile her materialistic life with being spiritual. “He’s a very spiritual person,” she gushed. “And I’m constantly struggling with the idea of being spiritual and material.” Perhaps that explains Katy’s recent discussion of religion in Rolling Stone? Regardless, if he can push Katy to consider big ideas, sounds like true love to me.
