'Thor: The Dark World' Director Brings 'Game Of Thrones' Grit To Asgard

by Brett White

The most recent trailer for "Thor: The Dark World" showed that the realm of Asgard has changed just a bit since we last saw it in 2011's "Thor." Things are a bit edgier, tenser, and rougher for the Odinson and company this time around, and all of that is due to the involvement of "Game of Thrones" director Alan Taylor.

The new "Thor" director was in Anaheim, California this past weekend for Disney's D23 Expo, where the next Marvel movie got quite a bit of attention. In an interview with IGN, the director revealed that his new job directing Loki isn't so different from his old job directing Lannisters.

"In both cases, it's using the conceit of a fantastical, alien world to sort of make fresh what is really a domestic drama," said Taylor. "In 'Game of Thrones,' seeing Tyrion battle with his sister, seeing the relationship between children and their fathers, it's all stuff we can relate to."

The director said that the groundwork for his familial take was laid by the franchise's previous director, Kenneth Branagh. "The brilliant thing that Ken Branaugh did when I was watching it was make it a story about two brothers," said Taylor. "It was a story about brothers competing for the love of their father. It's small and confined and human, where at the same time there's this blown-out, intergalactic world."

"Game of Thrones" has made fantasy cool in the eyes of everyone, so having that show on his resume didn't exactly hurt his chances of getting the job.

"It turns out that [Marvel Studios president] Kevin Feige was a big fan of 'Game of Thrones,' so I came in with a kind of mandate to bring some of that to this world. It was what I wanted to do, and just by bringing me in they kind of signed off on the idea I think."
