Coldplay Giving U.S. Another Shot

Grandaddy will open dates for Brit rockers on outing kicking off May 24; 'Shiver' hits radio April 9.

After cutting short a brief North American trek in February, Coldplay have announced plans to return to the States later this spring for a more extensive tour, set to kick off May 24 in Boston.

The wistful Brit rock group has tapped Modesto, California's Grandaddy to serve as the supporting act, according to Coldplay's label.

Coldplay pulled the plug on a New York gig on February 16 — and abandoned shows in Boston (February 17), Toronto (February 20) and Miami (February 23) — after lead singer Chris Martin came down with the flu.

Although Martin has rebounded from that illness, manager Phil Harvey has posted a notice on the band's official Web site saying that Martin has been diagnosed with voice exhaustion, causing Coldplay to put a European tour scheduled for April 1 to 18 on ice.

Martin is expected to recover in time for the new dates, and Coldplay still plan to take a short jaunt to America next month to play "Saturday Night Live" on April 7 and a make-up show in New York on April 9.

Coldplay have settled on "Shiver" as the second U.S. single from their debut album, Parachutes, which has sold more than 375,000 copies Stateside.

"Shiver" will be released to radio on April 9, and Coldplay have already completed a video for the track with director Grant Gee, who also filmed the Radiohead tour documentary, "Meeting People Is Easy."
