Smash Mouth Talk About Breaking Through

September 30 [10:00 EDT] -- In the wake of successful ska bands such as No Doubt, the Mighty Mighty Bosstones, Sublime, Reel Big Fish and others, the latest band in this genre to hit it big is Smash Mouth.

The group's debut album, "Fush Yu Mang," is rising up the top 40 on the "Billboard" album chart, thanks largely to Animals-throwback sound of the album's first single [article id="1445735"]"Walking on the Sun" [1MB QuickTime][/article].

Smash Mouth followed a familiar formula for success as the band played years of small club gigs to build a buzz.

The band also notes that MTV VJ Carson Daly had a hand in the band's big break, after they took a demo tape to some friends at the San Jose, California radio station KOME.

Frontman Steve Harwell explained, "Greg and I brought it in and we have a friend that works there, in the marketing department or whatever. We had him hook us up with Carson Daly, who was a DJ, at the time there, and our friend

Jim Pratt, who did all the programming or whatever there. We went in there and they were playing it for them, and they were like, 'Man, where'd you get this sh** from?' and... they freaked out and they were like, 'Oh, we've got to play this,' and they played it for their program director J. Taylor and he flipped out, so they added the record.

The band has had no problem finding airtime since then, as the single currently sits atop "Billboard" magazine modern rock chart.
