Schoolboy Q On 'XXL' Freshmen: 'I Should've Been On It Last Year'

'And the year before that,' Q tells 'RapFix Live' before opening up about his major-label debut 'Oxymoron.'

Schoolboy Q has had a pretty eventful week. On Friday, the Black Hippy MC released "Yay Yay," the first song off his upcoming major-label debut Oxymoron, and on Wednesday it was revealed that Q earned a spot on [article id="1704418"]XXL Magazine's annual Freshman cover[/article].

During Wednesday's "RapFix Live" Schoolboy played nonchalant about making the cover, calling the honor "cool" but insisting "I should've been on it last year and the year before that." But Q was plenty excited for his new single. "It's basically the story of me as a kid, dealing with my mom and sneaking behind mom's and grandmom's back," Schoolboy said of "Yay Yay," his coming-of-age drug tale.

The Boi-1da-produced track isn't the first single from Oxymoron, but rather simply a song that Q and his Top Dawg Entertainment team decided to release for the fans. "I was scared to put the record out, a record called 'Yay Yay' as the single. I don't think that's really good," he said laughing about the title which is slang for cocaine.

Oxymoron will be released through Top Dawg and Interscope, but Dr. Dre's Aftermath label won't be attached to the LP, Q says. Many simply assumed that because Schoolboy's TDE running mate Kendrick Lamar saw his good kid, m.A.A.d city album released under Dre's banner that Q's deal would be structured similarly, but he confirmed that isn't the case.

While Oxymoron doesn't have a release date just yet, the Los Angeles lyricist confirmed with "RapFix" host Sway Calloway that the long player is already finished, unless he happens upon a new track that he just can't pass up. "It's honestly really done. I'm honestly just putting pieces together making sure it sounds right. But when I say done, that doesn't mean that another song can't knock another song off," he explained of his process. "I'm evaluating the album right now. I'm not doing too much recording unless it's the record record."
