Former 'Green Lantern' Rumor Target Ryan Gosling Explains Why Superhero Movies Aren't For Him

Before Ryan Reynolds was chosen to play the Green Lantern of Space Sector 2814, it was easier to keep track of the actors who weren't rumored to be up for the role than all of the potential Hal Jordans suggested by "insider sources" at various movie blogs.

Back in October 2008, one "Green Lantern" rumor had "The Notebook" star Ryan Gosling pegged for the role. Even though we now know that the DC hero will be played by Reynolds (and the outlets that sparked the rumor later exchanged Gosling for "Star Trek" actor Chris Pine in another casting rumor that was eventually debunked), when we had a chance to catch up with Gosling during the Sundance Film Festival, we had to ask how much of the rumor was true.

"I don't know," said Gosling, in town for the premiere of "Blue Valentine" at the film festival. "Those movies are really hard and you have to be a really good actor to do that stuff. To pretend like something's chasing you that's not chasing you? All of that stuff, that's tough."

While Gosling hesitated to confirm or deny any past involvement with "Green Lantern," he did explain — at length — why blockbuster films of the superhero ilk just aren't his thing.

"When you see these big CGI movies, I just think that's really hard," he said. "Those guys are really great actors to convince you that there's a big monster there that's not really there."
