In an interview with ShortList.com, he discussed the status of the Frank Sinatra film, which he continues to work on, and the difficulties he's encountered in turning it into a reality.

"It’s very hard because here is a man who changed the entire image of the Italian-American," Scorsese said of the music and screen legend. "And that’s just one thing. Along with his political work, civil rights, the Mob..."

That organized crime connection has already been an issue, given that Ol' Blue Eyes' daughter (and executive producer of the biopic), Tina Sinatra, isn't too comfortable with the film going in that direction. But even in this new interview, there's a reference to Scorsese's mafia classic "Goodfellas," which indicates the filmmaker does indeed hope to go there.

"In structure I’d like it to be more like 'GoodFellas.'" Scorsese said regarding which of his films "Sinatra" will most resemble. "But like 'The Aviator,' it only deals with certain times in his life. We can’t go through the greatest hits of Sinatra’s life. We tried this already. Just can’t do it. So the other way to go is to have three or four different Sinatras. Younger. Older. Middle-aged. Very old. You cut back and forth in time – and you do it through the music."

Simon Dang at ThePlaylist, which tipped us off to the interview, now imagines a Sinatra biopic resembling Todd Haynes' Bob Dylan film "I'm Not There," with each of those different Sinatras being portrayed by a different actor. But given the way Leonardo DiCaprio played Howard Hughes over the course of his life in "The Aviator," I'd trust that Scorsese would allow the actor to do the same with this.

Scorsese did at least hint that he'd like to one day work with Johnny Depp, George Clooney, Brad Pitt and Tobey Maguire. So even if all these actors weren't to equally portray the Chairman of the Board, perhaps the filmmaker can find some other parts for them in the biopic, even if they're mere cameos, a la Jude Law as Errol Flynn in "The Aviator." How about Clooney as Dean Martin? Depp as bandleader Harry James? Pitt as Paul Anka? Maguire as mobster Sam Giancana?
