'Paradise' Trailer: Diablo Cody Takes the Director's Chair

For her directorial debut, Diablo Cody stepped into rather familiar territory indeed: A young woman experiences one of life's many crises and takes her sweet ole' time figuring out what the heck to do about it, all the while dishing out zingy one-liners and palling up with a few new, weird people.

The trailer for her "Paradise," formerly titled "Lamb of God," features Julianne Hough in series of hideous blonde wigs as Lamb (yes, Lamb), a conservative little church girl — a devout member "since she was knee high to a bug" — whose faith gets rattled up once she survives a plane crash, or as she calls the experience, being "barbecued in jet fuel."

Yikes!

The poor little Lamb heads to Vegas, not coincidentally nicknamed "Sin City," and there she runs into a few characters of interest portrayed by a bar-keeping Russell Brand and Octavia Spencer as a feathery showgirl. Haircutting, tattooing (sorta) and zip-lining ensues, much to the chagrin of her parents, portrayed by Holly Hunter and Nick Offerman.

Somehow, someway, the girl appears to wind up an optimist. "Some folks say this whole world is broken. I say it's paradise," she says. D'awww ...

Since this is doubly the handiwork of the Oscar-winning word-slinger Diablo Cody herself, one can probably expect there to be more folds to the story and witty lines than presented here, such as ...

... but we'll have to wait and see.

"Paradise" is set to bow in theaters sometime in October, with an early DirecTV release on Aug. 9.
