Bruce Springsteen has another award to put on his mantelpiece alongside his Oscar and Grammys, this one a humanitarian honor from the NAACP.

Springsteen accepted a Humanitarian Community Service Award at a ceremony in Middletown, New Jersey, on Sunday from a local chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, according to the Associated Press.

" 'Humanitarian' is too big a word for what I do," said Springsteen, who added that he wanted his work to help empower people as music had done for him as a teenager, according to the news service.

Springsteen drew praise from civil rights activists and fire from New York City police this summer for his song "American Skin," which addresses the 1999 police shooting of Guinea native Amadou Diallo in the doorway of his Bronx apartment building.

Springsteen has not recorded the song, subtitled "41 Shots," after the 41 gunshots fired at the unarmed Diallo, though he performed it at each of his 10 shows at New York's Madison Square Garden this summer.
