When Andrew Met Emma: A 'Spider-Man' Love Story

A love story is only as strong as its lovers — and make no mistake, though "The Amazing Spider-Man" is very much an action movie filled with wall-to-wall wall-crawling and web-spinning galore, it's also very much about the budding romance between Peter Parker and Gwen Stacy, played by real-life couple Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone.

MTV News caught up with both actors at the recent "Amazing Spider-Man" junket and they revealed that their excellent chemistry came to them almost instantly. Garfield in particular had lots of praise for Stone, who steps into a very challenging role as Parker's first (and ill-fated) love interest.

"We got on really well as people, in between [takes]," Garfield remembered. "That was the fun stuff: In between, we'd just mess around, and I felt, 'Ah, this is different.' I wasn't really aware what was happening in the screen test. She keeps you on your toes, and that wakes you up. That was the beginning."

Stone described her screen test as "very elaborate," involving full hair and makeup and the film's director of photography, among other elements. For her audition, Stone read scenes with Garfield including the first meeting of Peter and Gwen at Oscorp, and a later scene that she'd only describe as "sad." Despite the pressure of the situation, Stone rose above her competitors and won the coveted role of Gwen, a victory that Garfield was certainly rooting for.

"Obviously I was so happy that she got the role and decided to do it," he said. "[Working with Stone] were the days I'd look forward to, you know? For Peter as well, because Peter goes through some horrible stuff in the movie. There's some joy to be had when experiencing his first love."
