You're Not Alone — Kim Kardashian, Lorde, And A Bajillion Other Women Don't Wash Their Hair Every Day

Wondering how often you're supposed to wash your hair before your friends/coworkers/family members think you're a disgusting freakazoid? Well, you've come to the right place. I have made it my personal mission to upend the idea that all humans NEED to wash their hair every day. The truth is: It really depends. On the texture of your hair. On your activity level on a given day. On the ~look~ you're going for. There is no prescribed frequency with which you're "supposed" to wash your hair, merely a social construct that NOT washing it every day is bad. The real truth is: It's 100% up to you.

For example, I wash my hair on roughly a 3-4 day cycle: blow drying it and styling it in loose waves the first day, going for a grungier lived-in look the second day (the best day, IMHO), throwing it up in a ponytail the third day, and if I push it to a fourth day, it'll probably be in some kind of top knot situation. Don't believe that there are other people like me? Wise up, h8r. Here are a bunch of celebrity no-wash testimonials. Ever heard of Kim Kardashian, Lorde, Ciara, Jennifer Aniston, Shailene Woodley, Amanda Seyfried, Jessica Simpson, Adele, or Gwyneth Paltrow before??? Yea, that's what I thought.

In a recent interview with Into The Gloss, Kim Kardashian revealed, "For my hair, I don’t wash it every day. We start out with a blowout on day one, then we go into a messier vibe the next day, and then we flat iron it and do a really sleek look on day three since that requires a little oil in the hair. Day four could be a slicked-back ponytail, and on the fifth day is when you wash it. That’s a little excessive, maybe. [Laughs]"

LORDE

In an interview with us, Lorde said, "My hair is wild and what you do to maintain it is: Don't wash it that often. Once every two weeks is a good vibe."

CIARA

On the Grammys red carpet, Ciara admitted, "How often do I wash my hair? Ooh, now, that is so bad because if I'm gonna be honest, I will go a good two weeks without washing my hair."

ADELE

The secret to Amanda Seyfried's hair? "Don’t wash it!," she told People Stylewatch. "I wash my hair every three days which is something I would’ve never imagined years ago, but I also use dry shampoo and my hair is even healthier."

During a cover shoot with Lucky Magazine, Jessica Simpson revealed, "I think that the best thing you can do for your hair is only wash it once a week. If you clean your hair too much, it just strips down the natural oils."

If what celebs are doing isn't convincing enough for you, how about the real life beauty routines of some of MTV News' best and brightest?

CHRISTINA G.

I have long wavy hair, but unlike Kim K., I can't go five days without a wash, I'm just not that talented when it comes to styling. I tend to shampoo my hair twice a week, and four days out of the week, I will wet it with conditioner, then take a flat iron to it or curl it. One day, I'll give it a rest because I feel like my hair hates me after all of that.

RACHEL M.

My hair is a 24/7 mess. It’s long (all the way to my belly button, YIKES I NEED A CUT), very wavy/curly, very thick, and the texture is IDK? I’m not sure what specific texture my hair is, I just know that it HAS texture. So much so that my hair isn’t the type that takes dyeing very well because it just fries my hair. In the past year-ish I’ve started washing my hair once or twice a week (depending on how I wear it). Because my hair is curly, if I let it air dry it tends to get oily quicker versus if I blow dry it I can go longer without washing it (I’m on Day 4 of not washing it right now). As far as hairstyle, mine is so long and annoying that I can only wear it down on the first day it’s been washed. Then after that, I wear it in a ponytail or braids. If I don’t brush my hair every single day (morning and night), it gets massive knots that I have to cut out. YAY!

I wash my hair anywhere from once a week to once every three days. It depends on the hair products I’m playing with at the time. My hair is medium length when I wear it curly, but when straightened/wet, it's pretty long. Curly hair is very dry, so I can usually go without washing for a long time. I shampoo with a sulfate-free product, then I follow with a thick conditioner, and afterwards, I apply a leave-in treatment (like the Moroccan Oil hair mask). After about an hour, I rinse it off and work in a hair oil, a leave-in conditioner, a curling cream and some mousse. I might also throw in some hairspray. Curly hair takes work!

STACEY S.

I literally have to wash my hair everyday. It's medium length and super fine, so if I don't wash it, it will get hella dirty and gross. The longest I have gone without washing my hair is maybe three days, and that's because I was stuck in bed and sick. The only exception is if I'm on vacation and hanging in the ocean.

ABBY D.

My hair is pretty standard Asian hair: straight, smooth and it’s fairly long at this point. I used to shampoo my hair every other day, but since I go to the gym four or more days a week, it would definitely get too oily, so now it’s everyday. In the morning, I wash it and let it air dry if it’s above 50 degrees outside but blow dry if it’s below that. Throughout the day, you can probably tell what I’m doing based on what hairstyle I have. I’ll put my hair in a bun if I’m eating, in a high ponytail if I’m eating ice cream (weird, but true) or working out, and any other time it will be down or in a braid.

I have normal-ish fine hair but a lot of it, and it's definitely long, past shoulder-length. I operate on a 5–6 Day cycle depending on my hair's top pony capabilities. A top pony can carry me to the 7–8 day range because the oil helps maintain the shape.

JORDANA O.

I wash my hair twice a week, Wednesdays and Sundays, AND I'M NOT EVEN ASHAMED TO ADMIT THAT.

SHEENA O.

I’ve been relaxing my hair since I was in middle school—it used to be waist-length, but I cut it in an ill-advised desire to look like a girl in a Delia’s catalogue. REAL BAD MISTAKE. I’ve never been able to get it back to the super long length I loved, so I alternate between wearing shorter “protective” styles (like buns and braids) and extensions. I wash my hair once a week, usually—I get the most mileage out of clean hair or day-old, and after that, it’s pretty much up. I have to get a touch up relaxer every 6-8 weeks or else my roots get a little wild. I also moisturize it errday and sleep with a head wrap or on a satin pillow like a princess.

I try to wash once a week, but sometimes I can only make it to five days before I'm a greaseball. Usually, I wear it curly for two days, straight for a couple more, start on the dry shampoo by Day 3/4, and then, the final leg of the journey is usually spent in a top bun. Also, I have to wash my bangs every other day, or it's a whole mess. If you see me in a hat, I'm pushing the 6/7 mark. And then, the week's over, and it's a sweet relief.

EMILEE L.

I have long straight hair and wash it every day. Maybe once over the weekend. On my second day, I'll sometimes wear it down if I'm feeling it, but most definitely by the end of the day, it's in a bun.

MAEVE K.

I wash my hair, like, every four days. If I get it cut and washed and blown out—whew, man—I can go longer. Like, way longer. My lack of interest in washing my hair stems from how long it takes my hair to A.) dry, B.) be styled, C). look good. It simply doesn’t look good on the first day, so washing it right after it has achieved peak texture would be cruel. (P.S. I always get the most compliments on my hair when it’s at its dirtiest, so see ya, h8ers!!!!!!!!!!)

TAMAR A.

I have naturally curly hair that acts like a total bastard and does WTFever it wants when it wants. So, usually I’ll wash it every other day if I want it to look like “curly activated” and just pray to Hair Goddess for the best. If I go to the gym and sweat like a beast, I’ll definitely wash it. But if my hair is looking on point I’ll rearrange my whole workout routine around preserving my sexy, to paraphrase the great Diddy. But, when I have a magical, expensive fancy lady blowout, I will go up to five or six day with no washing. Gotta break it down by dollars-per-no-wash: ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I literally spent $72 after tipping the stylist and hair washer guy (the head massage alone was worth it) recently for a blow out (I cannot blow out my hair by myself because I don’t have arms in the back of my head. Or whatever. I’m woefully incapable.) You KNOW I’m not washing my hair for like six days because that’s like $12 a day for excellent hair. I should also add that my hair is bone-dry, so it’s not until like Day 4 that things start to get even the least bit hairy. (Harrrrr. Puns.) Plus, that’s like the first rule of Miss America: Don’t wash your hair. And bomb at state capitals. Point being, hair is difficult, and don’t wash it too often because it’ll look better if you don’t. Natural oils and whatnot.

I have straight, medium-length hair that I wash every day, which I know is terrible. My hair is incredibly fine, and if I don’t wash it every day it just turns into a greasy mess. I’m probably doing everything wrong, though. Actually, I know I’m doing everything wrong because I know you’re not really supposed to wash your hair every day.

CHRISSY M.

My hair is incredibly thick and grows outward, not downward, so I'm constantly trying to de-volumize it. (Being half German and half Greek is an interesting combo.) Since it's a blunt cut right below my shoulders, I'm able to shower at night and sleep on it wet because a hair dryer just makes it bigger. The first day after a shower is the worst because it's still fluffy, but by the second and third day it's got that perfect beachy wave. By the fourth day of no washing, I start to get greasy roots, but then I just use a little Bumble and Bumble dry shampoo on the roots to (hopefully) push it oneeee more day, but if not, I just cave and wash it. I usually wear it down, so the style never changes—just the amount of product I use to ~tame~ it.

I have long, thick curly hair, and I usually go a week without washing if it's blowdried or flat-ironed straight. Days 1-4, I wear it straight. Day 5 is half-up. Day 6 is high ponytail. And Day 7 is a bun. The cycle starts every Saturday, when I blow dry my hair (which takes two hours). —__—

QUINN K.

I have kind of thick, wavy ginger hair that's just below shoulder-length. I used to wash my hair every night, but after I realized I had more split ends than there are humans living in New York City, I cut back to see if it would make any difference. Now, I’ll wash it about every two or three days, putting it in a ponytail or a fishtail braid on the second or third day if it starts to get greasy. My hair has gotten much softer, my split ends have definitely decreased, and now, I can braid *almost* as well as Lauren Conrad (JK, that’s impossible), so it’s a win-win.
