Idina Menzel Wants To Give Elsa A Girlfriend In 'Frozen', Too

Your move, Disney

Frozen fans have been campaigning to get Elsa a girlfriend in the upcoming sequel, and now the Queen of Arendelle herself has backed the fan-fueled effort.

"I think it's great," Idina Menzel told Entertainment Tonight at the Billboard Music Awards on May 22. "Disney's just gotta contend with that. I'll let them figure that out."

Earlier this month, 17-year-old Alexis Isabel tweeted #GiveElsaaGirlfriend in response to Disney's abysmal lack of queer characters. It quickly became a trending topic, with fans all over the world chiming in to make Disney a little less heteronormative.

"Giving young girls the chance to understand that a princess can love another princess the same way Cinderella loved her Prince Charming is vital to their development," Isabel wrote in her MTV Founders essay. "No one deserves to feel isolated and confused about who they are. All we need is someone to show us that there are other options, other kinds of princesses, and other ways to have the happy ending that you deserve."

Elsa is the perfect place to start for Disney. After all, she's been breaking boundaries since the film's release in 2013. She proved that princess didn't need a prince to find happily ever after. In fact, all she needed was her sister -- and a cuddly snow monster named Marshmallow.

Frozen director Chris Buck even hinted at broaching more modern themes in the upcoming sequel. "We will tackle other issues that, I think, are out there today that boys and girls, men and women, are dealing with," he told MTV News in August. "I think we’re very aware of what is happening in society."
