Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau Tells Syrian Refugees ‘You Are Home'

Trudeau says the 'new Canadians' will also have the opportunity to become citizens.

Just when you thought your imaginary Canadian boyfriend (and, okay, the Canadian Prime Minister) Justin Trudeau couldn't get any more delightful, the world was served up with an incredibly moving gesture of hospitality and compassion -- as he personally welcomed the first 163 Syrian refugees (of the 25,000 he hopes to place before March 2016) into Canada.

“Tonight is a wonderful night where we get to show a plane-load of new Canadians what Canada is all about, but we get to show the world how to open our hearts and welcome in people who are fleeing extraordinary difficult situations," Trudeau said in a speech captured by the New York Times. “Tonight they step off the plane as refugees but they walk out of this terminal as permanent residents of Canada."

With just three words, Trudeau made a profound statement about his country's attitude toward refugees: “You are home," he said. “You’re safe at home now.”

The "new Canadians," as Trudeau called them, were processed in the terminal and were given public health insurance cards, winter clothing and other supplies they might need to begin their new lives, The Times reports. Despite the mixed reactions to refugees around the world (especially in the neighboring United States), the Times reports that there's been a "widespread embrace" of Trudeau's refugee plans by the Canadian public.

“This is something we’re able to do in this country because we define a Canadian not by a skin color or a language or a religion or a background, but by a shared set of backgrounds, aspirations, hopes and dreams that not just Canadians but people around the world share."

Just in case your heart isn't bursting out of your chest, also peep Trudeau talking sweetly to a baby wearing a flower crown and helping a young girl into her new winter coat to have your faith in humanity restored:
