Who Is 'A' On 'Pretty Little Liars?' Here Are The 23 Most Likely Suspects

It has to be a Liar. RIGHT?!

Who is "A"? It's been the seasons-long mystery on "Pretty Little Liars" since the very beginning, and now it looks like we may finally get the answer we've been waiting for in the season five finale.

According to "PLL" boss Marlene King, we will have all of the information we need to figure out the entire "A" game by the end of the season. So we decided to start the "A" investigation early. We put the 23 most likely "A" suspects together in one list, ranging from the relatively hArmless to Uber "A" material.

Who do we think might be the Big Bad behind the hoodie? Here are our top picks:

Emily Fields

ABC Family

Emily Watches Paige on Pretty Little Liars

We've long suspected that a Liar was the ultimate Big Bad on "Pretty Little Liars." But it is NOT Emily. Out of all of the Liars, Em is the only one that doesn't make a viable "A" suspect. Why? Because Ali was her first love, and she still has genuine feelings for her former best friend. She was arguably the most affected by Ali's disappearance and subsequent reappearance. So, no, we don't think Emily could be "A." She's far too compassionate to go to the dArk side.

Talia

ABC Family

Talia, Pretty Little Liars

Talia is new to Rosewood, so there's no way she could be Uber "A," but she might be one of "A"'s minions. Perhaps she's being blackmailed to get close to Emily? It wouldn't be the first time.

Mona Vanderwaal

ABC Family

Mona on '

We're 99.9999 percent sure Mona is dead. But the fact that she had been planning to fake her death to frame Ali has us contemplating Mona's involvement in the "A" game. As much as we love/d Mona and her evil genius, unless she's on the Otherside with Miranda (RIP "Ravenswood"), there's just no way a dead girl can be the mastermind behind all of "A"'s cruel games.

Toby

ABC Family

Sad Toby on Pretty Little Liars

LOL, no. Sure, Toby has the motive for wanting to make Ali's life miserable -- she was responsible for the birth of Do Rag Toby -- but the PLL Powers That Be have already tricked us into thinking Toby was "A" once, and they're not going to do it again.

Maya St. Germain

ABC Family

Maya St. Germain, Pretty Little Liars

Again, we're pretty sure a dead girl isn't hiding behind the infamous hoodie, but the fact that we've never seen Maya's body has always been a red flag in our books. After all, on a show like "Pretty Little Liars," you're alive until confirmed dead -- and that confirmation usually comes in the form of a cold, dead body. Could Maya have faked her death? We're not entirely convinced. Maya loved Emily, so why would she try to make her life a living hell? It doesn't add up.

Paige McCullers

ABC Family

PLL Paige

Paige has always been a popular "A" suspect. Remember when she legit tried to kill Emily in the swimming pool? Yeah, that doesn't help her case. However, Paige is currently in California, and "A" is very much in Rosewood, so it looks like Paily fans can rest easy in knowing their OTP still has a chance. You know, if Paige ever comes back from San Francisco.

Caleb Rivers

ABC Family

Caleb on Pretty Little Liars

It breaks our hearts to even put Caleb on this list because he's the only decent guy the Liars have on their side, but hear us out. "A" is a master hacker. Over the past few seasons, "A" has corrupted computer files, hacked into school records and has proven to be a technology whiz. Caleb totally fits the bill on all of those points. He's the closest thing to a weapon the Liars have in their fight against "A." But we don't think Caleb is Big "A." After all, he did disappear for half a season to front HIS OWN SHOW. So we think it's possible he could be working with "A" -- if "A" is Hanna. Because the only way we'll accept Caleb's involvement in this mess is if he and Hanna are in it together, "Bonnie and Clyde"-style.

Byron Montgomery

ABC Family

Byron Montgomery, Pretty Little Liars

As sick as it is to imagine a parent behind the hoodie, Byron does have a motive. We know he's very capable of blackmail and keeping secrets, and he also used his own daughter to keeps his adultery a secret from his wife. (Gross.) So he's not exactly a stand-up guy as it is. Plus, he drinks the same vodka as "A," which we doubt is a coincidence. That being said, there would be nothing sadder than a middle-aged man terrorizing a group of teen girls, so we really doubt the writers will go this route.

Noel Kahn

ABC Family

Noel Kahn, Pretty Little Liars

We all know by know that the hotter the guy, the uglier the secrets, and Noel Kahn is no exception. In the season four finale, it was revealed that Noel was the one helping Ali. That doesn't sound like a very "A" thing to do. However, Ali also alluded to the fact that Noel has secrets of his own, and it kinda sounded like Ali was holding some blackmail over Noel's pretty little head. If that's true, then Noel has every reason to want to bring Ali down. But again, we just don't think he's Big "A" material.

Sydney Driscoll

ABC Family

Sydney, Pretty Little Liars

Sydney proved to be a master manipulator when she manipulated Emily into thinking she wanted to be her friend. We know Sydney was part of Mona's army, along with Jenna, until it was taken down by Ali. Sydney and Jenna then joined Ali's new group, and it was Sydney who told Emily she suspected Ali killed Mona. Now that we know Ali wasn't the one responsible for Mona's death, it sounds like Sydney was trying to convince Em of Ali's crimes, which is exactly what "A" would want. Sydney is obviously working for "A," but we're not so sure if she's the Big Bad. Jenna, on the other hand...

Jenna Marshall

ABC Family

Jenna Marshall, Pretty Little Liars

Jenna certainly has the manipulative powers to be "A" -- pretending to be blind isn't so easy! -- but that doesn't mean she has the ultimate baddie. We don’t know what Jenna’s endgame is, and we know even less about Sydney, but Jenna has always been the victim. She has every right to hate Ali and the Liars, and frankly, we don’t blame her. Not only were they involved in the accident that blinded her, but when they thought she was "A," their interaction with her bordered on harassment. That being said, Jenna is far too obvious. The Liars suspected her way back in season two. Plus, given her impaired vision, it would be really hard to pull of some of those dAngerous stunts.

Jason DiLaurentis

ABC Family

Jason DiLaurentis on '

Yes, it's totally effed up to think that Jason would want to kill his little sister, but this is "Pretty Little Liars" and effed up things happen all time time. Not only has Jason been caught in several lies of his own -- like that little rehab stint -- but he also has been getting awfully close to the Liars. His tryst with Hanna's mom was only his latest offense. We've long suspected that someone in the DiLaurentis family had a twin, and while the rest of the internet seems hellbent on proving the "Ali Twin Theory," we've always thought it was Jason who had the twin. What is Bethany Young was Jason's twin? And now he's just hella mad Ali killed his twin? Then again, remember when "A" dropped Jason down an elevator shaft? That's not really something you would want to inflict upon yourself.

Melissa Hastings

ABC Family

Melissa Hastings, Pretty Little Liars

The first of three Hastings on our list, Melissa's time in London has severely lowered her chances of being Big "A." (Think of how expensive that cell phone bill would be!) We know Melissa is smart, conniving, and extremely ambitious, but she clearly left the country to get away from "A," not to conspire with him/her. Of course, Melissa also knows more about the "A" game that she lets on, so we wouldn't be surprised if she was involved with "A"'s international operation. Because let's be real: how did that blood really get inside Spencer's purse?

Mr. Hastings

ABC Family

Mr. Hastings, Pretty Little Liars

Peter Hastings is a man of many secrets, and we've seen just how far he'll go to make sure they stay on the DL. We wouldn't be surprised if Mr. Hastings killed Mrs. DiLaurentis. She was going to get Spencer arrested for murder, and therefore, she had to be taken out. But we have a hard time picturing Mr. Hastings texting "Kisses -- A" to four teenage girls. Again, it would be extremely disappointing to learn a middle-aged man has been tormenting the Liars all these years. That doesn't mean he's not creepy though. We're watching you, Mr. Hastings.

Another DiLaurentis

ABC Family

Ali DiLaurentis on Pretty Little Liars

Twin or no twin, it's pretty obvious that Bethany Young was somehow related to the DiLaurentis family -- and possibly, the Hastings family if our "Jason Twin Theory" is correct. The only problem is we know Bethany is dead. A body was found buried, and the DNA evidence matched Bethany. But "A" is so much smarter than that. What if Bethany lived? And she somehow faked her own death. (Hey, it's been done before on this show.) From the Radley tapes, it sounds like Bethany had a hard childhood, one that was make even more unbearable by the "evil b--tch" who tormented her. That sounds exactly like Ali's M.O. So not only does Bethany have the perfect motive, she also is crazy enough to kill.

Ali DiLaurentis

ABC Family

Ali in Prison on PLL

We’ve never been fans of the "Ali is 'A'" theory; it’s way too obvious. The Liars, however, have spent the entire season trying to bring Ali down for her "A" crimes. Ali likes to play games, and we've learned she was a liar from a very young age. And she's left a lot of people burned by those lies, people who would want to hurt her -- and her friends. So for this reason alone, we don't think Ali could actually be "A." Why would she be trying to torment herself? Is she really that twisted? (The scary answer is "yes.")

Lucas Gottesman

ABC Family

Lucas, Pretty Little Liars

Lucas has always been on the creepy side, and his interest in photography is a big red flag in our book. He has a reason to hate Ali, as shown by his alliance with Mona (aka Original "A"). Plus, we know he's been on the "A" team before, so who's to say he didn't stay there and just lie to the Liars about Mona's blackmail? He also "left" Rosewood High School in season two. That could have been a cover-up. What if he spent the entire year plotting out his revenge? #RevengeOfTheNerd.

Spencer Hastings

ABC Family

Spencer on '

We're not going to lie: if Spencer is "A," we would be so freakin' excited. Spencer is really the only Liar smart enough (or so we think) to pull off all of "A"'s tricks. And it wouldn't be the first time she was revealed to be a double agent. Plus, Mrs. Grunwald gave us a pretty big clue in the season four finale when she said Ali feared one of the Liars the most. Naturally, we assumed it was Spencer because of their competitive friendship. But just because Spencer would make a fantastic "A" doesn't mean she's the Big Bad. Spencer has been hit with some of the toughest blows in these past few seasons -- she nearly went insane, wasn't accepted into her beloved Ivy League colleges and broke things off with Toby (*SOB*) -- which makes us think Spence is more of a target than a criminal.

Wren Kingston

ABC Family

Dr-Wren-Kingston

EVERYTHING ABOUT WREN IS CREEPY. Not only does he have a thing for younger girls -- between his flings with Hanna and Spencer -- but he also started working at Radley after Mona got admitted for treatment. He's a doctor, which gives him unlimited access to the drugs, medical records, and other supplies "A" seems to possess. And who could forget the scene where he's DRAWING RED COAT? Wren has to be on the "A" team. That's the only way we could justify his life choices.

CeCe Drake

ABC Family

CeCe Drake, PLL

Sure, it may look like CeCe has been helping Ali, but it wouldn't be the first time someone double-crossed their frenemy in Rosewood. How do we know CeCe isn't somehow connected to the "A" game? She was there the night Ali was buried alive -- aka the same night Bethany Young was murdered. For all we know, she could be getting close to Ali for intel. You know what they say: keep your friends close and your enemies closer.

Ezra Fitz

ABC Family

Ezra on Pretty Little Liars

Yes, we still think Ezra could be "A" even after that red herring of a plot twist in the season four finale. At the end of the day, it comes down to money. "A" has a lot of money, more money than any teen could reasonably get their hands on. Ezra, however, has a drawer full of money -- and we don't think he used it all on his true crime novel. He was the person who first compared Alison to Holly Golightly, apparently catalyzing Ali’s fascination with the persona. When Ali was planning on skipping the country, she used Holly Varjak as the pseudonym on her fake passport, and when Aria and Hanna went to visit Cyrus in the hospital, he wrote Varjack on a piece of paper. Could Varjack -- the male lead in "Breakfast at Tiffany’s" -- be Ezra? If so, that pretty much proves he's "A."

Hanna Marin

ABC Family

Hanna on Pretty Little Liars

We previously ruled out the "Hanna Is 'A'" theory, but some major clues in season five have us reconsidering everything we thought we knew about Hanna Marin. Spencer’s teacher -- the one who owns the storage unit next to the one registered in Hanna's name -- told Spencer that she had seen a blonde exit the unit a few times. Spencer assumed this was Ali, but what if it was Hanna? She could have rented the storage locker and led Spencer and Caleb there on purpose. Plus, Hanna was so close to Mona while she was alive. Could she have taken the game from Mona? Hanna has been a bit of a secret genius lately, which has always been "A"'s M.O. Clearly, we -- and the Liars -- have underestimated her.

Aria Montgomery

ABC Family

Mike and Aria on PLL

The internet has long suspected Aria was "A," and honestly after mulling all of these other possibilities, nothing would be as satisfying as Aria being "A." NOTHING. Let's go over the facts. The texts from "A" don't start until Aria comes back from her time abroad in Iceland. And if Ezra is in on it (as we suspect), it would make sense that Aria is too. (#BonnieAndClyde2.0). Plus, Aria has also gotten the reputation of being "the best liar" on more than one occasion. And then there was that time Mona hid an acronym in the sentence, "Miss Aria, you're a killer, not Ezra's wife." Interesting choice, right? Mona was always one step ahead, and we wouldn't be surprised if she knew about Aria's bAd behavior.
