When it comes to "The Hunger Games," we were very pleased with what director Gary Ross cooked up for the film adaptation.

It turned out to be a good movie and a great book-to-film adaptation, and we couldn't imagine it in anyone else's hands. That is, until we saw what "Fame" and "Mortal Kombat: Rebirth" director Kevin Tancharoen presented as a pitch trailer for Lionsgate studio on the project.

Slashfilm unearthed this pitch video Tancharoen submitted as a pseudo-application for the director gig way back when, and it's clear he had a unique vision for the property that more closely adopts the sci-fi and brutality aspects of the story rather than the emotional and political turmoils associated with the Games.

Tancharoen said, "It took me a month to finish it all. The pitch book took a little longer... It was incredibly difficult to find all these clips and tell a new story but I'm happy with the way it turned out."

The director also gave deference to Ross' work on "The Hunger Games," saying "I really loved the film that Lionsgate, Gary Ross, and Nina Jacobson made – I went opening night. I just think it's interesting to see how different directors visualize the same source material." Indeed!

Check out the vid to see what could've been. As a bonus, picking through and ID-ing the various slivers of film presented in the clip is oh-so-fun. Everything from "Twilight" and "Harry Potter" to "Batman Begins" and "Inglorious Basterds" can be seen in there!

Also, Tancharoen totally called it by vetting "Columbiana" star Amandla Stenberg as Rue.
