'Twilight' Dad Billy Burke Hopes His Daughter Is Just Like Bella Swan

'Bella's got an old soul, and I think that I'm already recognizing [that] in my kid,' he says of 15-month-old Bluesy LaRue.

In Stephenie Meyer's novels, some might say he is a bit underdeveloped as a character. In Catherine Hardwicke's movie, he barely got five minutes of screen time. The purpose of Charlie Swan seems to be twofold: be an awkwardly-out-of-touch dad to Bella and a well-meaning-but-clueless chief of police to Forks.

But thanks to veteran character actor Billy Burke, Charlie has become a fan favorite ever since "Twilight" was released last year. And now that he just finished shooting the back-to-back sequels and spending most of his time alongside Kristen Stewart and Rob Pattinson, Billy stopped by the MTV News studio this week to tell us that the best is yet to come -- thanks to a 20-pound Twilighter.

"Well, Charlie is -- per usual -- oblivious to what's going on," Burke laughed. "But his relationship with Bella gets a little deeper, a little darker. You'll see some of the same, but with thicker layers."

Portraying a fractured father/daughter relationship that is central to the whole series, Billy and Kristen have seen their own connection deepen as they've shot three films in the last two years.

"She and I, from the get-go, got along real well, both on and off set," he explained. "There was this natural comfortable-ness to our thing that we do, but what's changed for me most in conjuring up the father/daughter stuff is that I have a kid now. My daughter was born just after the making of 'Twilight.' She's 15 months old now, and so I now have a deeper and more realistic understanding of what it's like to have a daughter in the world.

"I think that's colored the Charlie and Bella stuff," Burke explained, saying fans might notice the change in the upcoming sequels. "In many different ways."

His daughter, a little girl named Bluesy LaRue, has taken up the majority of Burke's non-"Twilight" hours in the months since, and he said he wouldn't mind if she grew up to be much like his onscreen daughter.

"Bella's got an old soul, and I think that I'm already recognizing things that might be looking like an old soul in my kid right now -- and I would like that," he grinned. "I would like her to be a worldly person. I would like her to help me along the way, because parenthood is something that I never even expected to be involved in, and I'm going to need all the help that I can get."

And, if little Bluesy happens to bring home a pale, sparkly hunk someday to meet Dad, Billy said he'd be willing to keep his mind open -- he just doesn't want to consider the scenario right now.

"I try not to think about it," he said of possible Edward Cullen-esque suitors. "My parents are saying stuff about it all the time: 'Oh, just wait a couple of years.'

"Let's just slow down," he grinned. "She's 15 months old. Let's just put the brakes on. I just want to watch her grow up and hopefully shepherd her into normal kid-hood."
