Beck, Jamiroquai Lead Video Music Awards Nominees

July 22 [10:30 EDT] -- Beck and Jamiroquai heard their names a lot Tuesday morning as the nominees were announced for the 1997 MTV Video Music Awards.

Jamiroquai's gliding, sliding clip for "Virtual Insanity" topped all nominees, earning a total of nine nods for the video, including Breakthrough Video, Best New Artist In A Video, and Best Video Of The Year.

Meanwhile, Beck picked up seven nominations, five for "The New Pollution," and will vie for Best Male Video and Best Video Of The Year among other honors.

Beck and Jamiroquai will face off against Jewel ("You Were Meant For Me" ), No Doubt ("Don't Speak"), and Nine Inch Nails ("The Perfect Drug" which pulled in a total of five nods for Trent Reznor) for Best Video Of The Year.

Tuesday's press conference (presided over by 1997 VMA host Chris Rock, MTV President Judy McGrath, and the Wallflowers) also brought the news that U2, Beck, and the Spice Girls will perform on the 1997 VMA telecast, set for September 4 at New York City's Radio City Music Hall.

In other notable nominations, the Prodigy ("Breathe"), Puff Daddy ("I'll Be Missing You"), the Spice Girls ("Say You'll Be There), The Wallflowers ("One Headlight"), and Jewel once again will compete for the hearts of fans in the Viewers Choice category. This year, fans will be able to vote online for their favorite video by checking out MTV.com, or by visiting the MTV area of America Online.

This is likely to be the only awards ceremony ever where Iggy Pop and R. Kelly find themselves competing in the same category. It's also interesting that the "Best Dance Video" umbrella is wide enough to cover both the Prodigy's "Firestarter" and Freak Nasty's "Da Dip."
