Recoil
RECOIL: Hello to everyone on the net who is
tuning into this thing! I am glad to see that there is interest.
I will be on line in the next few weeks, so I can speak directly
with you all on the web.
Rick: Starting on new material soon?
RECOIL: What I'm doing at the moment is
working on re-mixes for the next single which is
"Stalker" and "Missing Piece." Sort of
extended versions. They will be released in February. Regarding
new material, I am hoping to start working on a new project in
the new year as well. Given the way I work, I don¹t know which
direction it's going to take.
Fran: Does this mean you will be up to date
with everything that is going on Faith?
RECOIL: Yeah I keep a regular eye on Faith
and find it interesting reading. People from the Faith
line recently sent me letters via Janet. I am hoping to be able
to contribute when I get myself on line.
Astral: What's your favourite track on Unsound
Methods?
RECOIL: I don¹t really have a favorite
track. It depends on my mood. There is one for every occasion.
Alex: Would you consider producing my band
IDEAL WORLD? If so, where can I send something?
RECOIL: Alex, you can send me a tape and I
will certainly give it a listen. It would have to be extremely
good for me to produce it since I don't normally undertake much
production work. You can send it to me via Janet or Roland at
Mute UK's office.
Incubus: You enjoy working with Doug
McCarthy? For how long have you been working together, if I'm not
totally wrong you even helped produce some Nitzer Ebb stuff? Was
that where it started? You plan to continue co-operation?
RECOIL: It started with Nitzer Ebb supporting
DM on the Music For The Masses
tour in ‘87, and continued with me producing an album for
them in '91 called Ebbhead. Douglas sang on my
last album Bloodline so our relationship has
grown over the years.
Fran: What do you think about doing a Bond-theme?
RECOIL: It would depend on the restrictions.
It wouldn't be the most exciting film project to undertake but
maybe a lucrative one.
AgentO: I have been working on a book about
yourself and Mode for the last 4 years, 2 before
you left the band, 4 copies made, one for you. How can I get it
to you?
RECOIL: Please send it to Mute UK (care of
Roland Brown) for my attention. It should get to me.
SUPRVIXN: A Kubrick movie would be great
though.
RECOIL: Yeah I agree.
mike: Are any of the singles going to be
released in the US any time soon?
RECOIL: I am never quite sure what Reprise
are doing. Unfortunately, communication with Reprise isn't what
it should be. At the moment they are waiting for response from
radio to see which single they would prefer to release. They have
however expressed an interest in "Stalker" with a
possibility of the inclusion of that track in a film. But I
don¹t know the name of the film.
Alex: Which program do you use for sequencing
software?
RECOIL: Steinberg Cubase (version 3.0 XT)
PumpkinKing: Do the vocalists receive a basic
melody before they add their parts? Or do they only send you the
vocals and you mix/sample them as you please?
RECOIL: I send each vocalist a tape of the
music which is normally 70% complete. Once they have contributed
their vocals, I then refine the structure and add last minute
melodies and musical parts.
Zulaikha: Alan, which, if any, new British
bands are you impressed with?
RECOIL: At the moment I like Radiohead,
Portishead, any other group with head on the end. New bands are
difficult. There aren¹t that many new bands that I like.
PumpkinKing: Is that a sample from Apocalypse
Now in the new album? If so, what's your feeling on that
movie?
RECOIL: Actually no, but the first track on
the album was based on Apocalypse Now which is
one of my all time favorite movies.
Bools_again: Are you good at sports Alan?
What's your favourite? (You asked for it).
RECOIL: Football - the English kind, is my
favourite, QPR being my favorite team. Followed by cricket. I was
good at cricket at school, but not football. My latest sporting
activity involves tennis.
Dioce: What do you think of the recent trends
in club and house music?
RECOIL: I don¹t really follow dance music
closely. I do think within dance genres, there are often some
good ideas to be found with some people who are innovative
amongst a lot of very ordinary music. What often disappoints me
about dance music is that there are so few people making it who
push the boundaries involving melodies and other ideas as well.
red: Alan what influences you when you write
songs, is it just the mood your in at the time, real life
experiences or maybe something you've read or seen that has an
impact on you?
RECOIL: It's mainly things that I have read
or seen, usually the darker side of life interests me more than
anything else.
Dioce: Would you ever consider working with
Brian Eno or Robert Fripp?
RECOIL: Well, Brian Eno did some re-mixes for
DM for "I Feel You" which were very
good. He would be very interesting to work with but also very
expensive to use as a re-mixer or a producer. I am not so sure
about Robert Fripp.
Astral: Alan, rumour has it that an enhanced
CD of the "Drifting" single will be released in the
U.S. T or F?
RECOIL: Yeah, last I heard that¹s true. It
was put to me that Reprise wanted to do that and I gave my
consent because I thought it was a good idea.
Aeon9: So Alan will you TOUR?
RECOIL: Well, I am not intending to do any
touring. With a project like this, with so many different
vocalists, it would be very hard to organize as well. Since my
departure from DM my priorities have changed and
touring, even though it had its' moments, is not the highest
thing on my agenda.
Dioce: How do you feel about covers?
RECOIL: Generally cover versions are not very
interesting even though I have done one myself which was
"Faith Healer."
YrFvrtSlv: Why don't you sing lead vocals?
RECOIL: The reason is that I don¹t
particularly like the sound of my own voice. I don¹t consider
myself a lyricist either. I would rather bring in somebody who is
good at that sort of thing.
SUPRVIXN: Would you consider doing a MTV
interview with Maggie?
RECOIL: Yeah, I will do an interview with
anyone.
SUPRVIXN: What type of vodka do you prefer?
RECOIL: Stoli.
Dioce: Do you get much say in the direction
of the lyrics since the vocalists usually write them? I mean,
beyond giving them a general topic?
RECOIL: I prefer to choose people who are
good at what they do and then give them a free reign. Some times
we adjust lyrics, but mostly I stick to what I am good at which
is the structuring and the placement of them within the music.
Zulaikha: Alan are you still a Smiths Fan?
RECOIL: Yeah I liked The Smiths, Morrissey
and his lyrics.
Stoepsel: If you hadn't gotten into music,
what else would you have done?
RECOIL: I hate that question.
Stoepsel: Let me rephrase my previous
question: What will you do after your musical career?
RECOIL: I don¹t really see an end to my
musical life. Even though I work very hard, I don¹t really
recognize what I am doing as a career. Its more passion and
something that I am always enthusiastic about.
JaeJong: Alan, would you ever, aside from Recoil,
consider producing another bands' album had you the time, and if
so, which band?
RECOIL: My general rule is to turn down
production work for other people so that I can devote my energy
to my own projects. I always look at offers in case something
special comes along.
TRITON: What kind of crowd are you looking to
reach with this new album - the same as DM or
different.
RECOIL: I don¹t mind who listens to my
music, but I don¹t expect that it will be for everybody. I make
music that I want to listen to and that¹s my only consideration.
YrFvrtSlv: Do you listen to your own
music(recreationally)?
RECOIL: Its impossible to enjoy by the time I
have finished the project. The best time for listening to my own
music is during the recording process especially during
spontaneous moments when new ideas first appear.
Vilse: What do you think about the Panasonic
mix of "Shunt?"
RECOIL: Its not the most ground breaking
remix I have ever heard. For me, in the context of how it appears
on the drifting CD, it works well.
JaeJong: Alan, you are cited as saying Clockwork
Orange is one of your favourite films, what do you think
about the book itself?
RECOIL: The book is nearly always better than
the film, that¹s a general comment - because nothing ever quite
beats your own imagination.
red: Where did you film the video for
"Drifting ?"
RECOIL: "Drifting" was filmed in a
disused hospital in Woolwich, London.
Zulaikha: Alan, what authors do you read?
RECOIL: I am attracted to science writers,
like Richard Dawkins and people like that. River Of Eden
is what I am reading at the moment. There's a book by Bill Bryson
called Mother Tongue. He's an American writer
who writes about the origins of the English language. I
thoroughly recommend this book for anyone interested in language.
Rick: About the website? What would be the
best way to pursue this? Communicate through Janet and Mute?
RECOIL: Yes probably, although I am looking
into setting up my own Recoil web page in the
near future. It may be better to let someone do this for me, we
can talk about this. I am going to be on-line soon, within the
next two weeks, so I may well be able to chat on the Faith
line itself, or through Janet.
Dioce: How do you choose samples? Do you have
a list of things you'd like to use someday?
RECOIL: I just take my samples from anywhere
and everywhere. Sometimes they are from TV, often I play them
myself or reuse old sounds.
silerntbob: Will you perform live on any TV
programs to support Unsound Methods?
RECOIL: If I am asked to do something that is
interesting or important maybe.
TRITON: When the next album comes out will it
have new artists on it?
RECOIL: I think there is a good chance that I
will use some new people. I always like the challenge of finding
new people to work with.
JaeJong: Alan, what would your website
consist of aside from your music?
RECOIL: One of my main problems with starting
a website is trying to think of enough interesting information to
put on it.
Alex: Who influenced you as a musician?
RECOIL: Well there are so many aren¹t there?
David Bowie, The Beatles, a lot of blues musicians, when I first
joined DM, Kraftwerk.
robaro: Any chance of working with Toni
Halliday again?
RECOIL: Probably not although I did go see
Curve the other night, we had a good drink at their after show
party and I met a lot of Recoil fans. Toni is
very caught up in her own new album.
Fran: Do you enjoy all the new computer stuff
like the net and mail etc?
RECOIL: Yes, but I'm not a big computer buff,
which is why I am only now getting around to getting on-line. I
spend so much of my time at a computer working on music that I am
scared I will spend the rest of my time also at the computer thus
bypassing the rest of my life.
Aeon9: Alan how was Curve's new material?
RECOIL: It was quite interesting, but the
sound wasn¹t great and a fire alarm was set off half way through
the gig which spoiled the vibe of it. Their new material sounds
more towards the Chemical Brothers and Prodigy, it's less guitar
based.
KAL: Alan, would you ever want to open you
own record label?
RECOIL: Probably not. It sounds like a lot of
hard work to me. I prefer to keep my operation to a minimum and
working on my own records seems to take all my efforts. I cant
imagine being dedicated enough to form a record label. I've seen
what it's done to Dan Miller.
RECOIL: Thanks everyone. I've enjoyed having
the opportunity to chat with some people in the U.S. and those of
you who indulge in the Faith line we will talk
soon. Thanks everyone for your nice comments about the album.
