Matchbox 20's Rob Thomas, Eagle-Eye Cherry, and Shania Twain were honored for having penned some of the most-played songs on radio and TV from the past year during the annual presentation of the BMI Pop Awards in Los Angeles on Tuesday.

BMI, the American performing rights organization responsible for licensing out songs to various businesses and media, announced the winners of its 48th annual Pop Awards and Citations of Achievement during a black-tie event staged at the Regent Beverly Wilshire Hotel in Beverly Hills.

Eagle-Eye Cherry's "Save Tonight," a number-one single from Cherry's debut album, "Desireless," was named the Pop Song Of The Year, while sexy country starlet Shania Twain was named the Pop Songwriter Of The Year for the second straight year.

No less than five Twain tunes received Citations of Achievement for being among the most performed songs in the BMI eligibility period for 2000 -- which ran from October 1, 1998 through September

30, 1999 -- including "From This Moment On," "Man! I Feel Like A Woman," "That Don't Impress Me Much," "You've Got A Way," and "You're Still The One.

Matchbox 20's Rob Thomas trailed Twain with four songwriting Citations, three for singles from his band's last album, 1996's "Yourself Or Someone Like You," and another for co-writing Santana's career rejuvenating hit, "Smooth," with Itaal Shur. MB20 will issue its new album, "Mad Season By Matchbox Twenty," on May 23.

Hip-hop songwriting siblings Fred and Rodney Jerkins also had three of their compositions cited by BMI, including Brandy and Monica's "The Boy Is Mine," Jennifer Lopez's "If You Had My Love," and Whitney Houston's "It's Not Right But It's Okay.

The Offspring, who have contributed a new song, "Totalimmortal," to the upcoming "Me, Myself, & Irene" soundtrack, received BMI's award for the Most Performed Song on College Radio, and frontman Dexter Holland was on hand to accept the collegiate-minded

honor.

Of the 121 songwriters and 75 songs receiving BMI's annual Pop Awards and Citations, seventeen artists were multiple winners, as Paula Cole, Sheryl Crow, Elton John, members of Sugar Ray, Sarah McLachlan, and Mariah Carey each placed two songs on BMI's most-performed list.
