Mary J. Blige, Andrea Bocelli Brought 'Heavy Emotion' To Grammy Duet For Haiti

'Our chemistry surprisingly really, really worked,' she says of the duo's performance of 'Bridge Over Troubled Water.'

The versatile [artist id="854"]Mary J. Blige[/artist] has collaborated with an array of stars in her career, from MCs like [artist id="1269"]Jay-Z[/artist] to legends like Elton John, but the Queen of Hip-Hop Soul found herself surprised to be collaborating with an opera star at the 52nd annual Grammy Awards on Sunday.

Blige and Andrea Bocelli took the stage during the Grammy telecast to sing Simon & Garfunkel's "Bridge Over Troubled Water," [article id="1630897"]dedicated to the people of Haiti[/article] in the aftermath of the devastating earthquake that struck the country.

"Our chemistry surprisingly really, really worked because we have heavy emotion, period, for our music and for Haiti," Blige told MTV News after the performance. "It was just genius of David Foster and Ron Fair to come up with the music bed that they did for this song. And the song is genius, 'cause that's what we're acting as -- we are their bridge, [article id="1630717"]Haiti's bridge over troubled water[/article]. It's a no-brainer after that."

The stirring rendition was certainly one of the highlights of the broadcast. Blige and Bocelli stepped onstage after an introduction by Wyclef Jean, himself a Haitian native.

The tune, like her effort during the "Hope for Haiti Now" telethon, will be available for digital download and proceeds will benefit organizations dedicated to relief for the ravaged island. Blige recently spoke with MTV News and emphasized the need for continued aid to Haiti.

"Myself, David Foster and Ron Fair, we were brainstorming about the Grammys, and we felt that it was important for Haiti to understand that we are their bridge right now over troubled water," she explained. "And we'll lay ourselves down for them to get over, and that's why we did it."
