With the daily sniping and backstabbing, the presidential campaign is starting to look like a remake of "Mean Girls." And, wouldn't you know it, that movie's star, Lindsay Lohan, is in the middle of the latest catfight.

According to Chicago Sun-Times gossip columnist Bill Zwecker, Lohan was interested in becoming "very involved" in the campaign of Democratic presidential candidate Senator Barack Obama and [article id="1593421"]his running mate, Senator Joe Biden[/article].

In addition to recently blogging about her distaste for [article id="1593791"]Republican vice-presidential candidate Sarah Palin's[/article] views on homosexuality -- in which she referred to the first-term Alaska governor as a "narrow-minded, media-obsessed homophobe" -- the actress had reportedly offered to host a series of events to appeal to young voters on the Democrats' behalf.

But an unnamed "top" source in the Obama campaign told Zwecker that the actress -- [article id="1565422"]who has been to rehab three times[/article] and at one point was a tabloid fixture for her wild antics -- is "not exactly the kind of high-profile star who would be a positive for us.'' Zwecker said the campaign quietly told Lohan "thanks, but no thanks" for the offer. She was, however, invited to attend a series of big Hollywood fundraising parties this week and pay thousands to hang out with other big-ticket Obama supporters such as Barbra Streisand, Steven Spielberg and David Geffen.

With no perceived slight going unaddressed in the final push to Election Day, the McCain camp took time Wednesday (September 17) to weigh in on the Lohan snub, according to TMZ.com. Spokesman Tucker Bounds told the site, "So let me get this straight -- they turned away Lindsay Lohan, but Barack Obama has friends like unrepentant terrorist Bill Ayers and convicted felon Tony Rezko? Maybe LiLo is just too upstanding for Barack Obama."

Ayers, a former member of the 1960s radical group the Weather Underground Organization, once served on the board of a Chicago anti-poverty group with Obama and moved in the same social circles as his Hyde Park, Chicago, neighbor for a period. Rezko, who lived across the street from Obama and contributed to his campaigns, was recently convicted on several counts of fraud and bribery.

That, in turn, elicited a comment from Obama spokesperson Tommy Vietor, who said, "Glad to see they're focused on the important issues over in McCain HQ."

Spokespeople for the Obama and McCain campaigns and Lohan could not be reached for comment at press time.
