While the first Sam Raimi “Spider-Man” film was widely praised and beloved, there was one particular, nitpicky issue that stuck in the craws of many Spidey fans: Organic webbing. The movie deviated from the comic book source material by jettisoning the web-shooters and fluid designed by Peter Parker in favor of webs that shoot directly out of the hero’s wrists. But fans can rest easy when it comes to “The Amazing Spider-Man,” because in the 2012 film, the web-shooters are back.

The organic webbing of the 2002 film simplified the character’s origin while allowing for a sly wet dream joke, and even made its way into the Marvel comic books for a while. But for many fans, including “The Amazing Spider-Man” director Marc Webb, Parker’s web-shooters are an important part of the character’s mythos and appeal, as he explained to Hero Complex.

“I had a meeting with Stan Lee and we talked about the web-shooters,” the director explained. “The web-shooters were able to dramatize Peter’s intellect and I thought that was really cool… To me, it’s something I remember from when I was a kid and thinking ‘It would be cool if I could build those.’”

Hearing the reasons behind the web-shooters from Spider-Man’s co-creator coupled with a desire to differentiate “The Amazing Spider-Man” from the Raimi films resulted in the inclusion of the web-shooters. But that’s not the only change to the character, as star Andrew Garfield is also sporting a very different version of the Spider-Man costume.

“We made a bunch of different suits for different lighting conditions. I wanted something that worked in the night a little better,” Webb admitted. “With the costume and the web-shooters we wanted to emphasize that these are things that Peter Parker made and that he is special himself even if he feels like he’s an outsider.

“The Amazing Spider-Man” stars Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone and Rhys Ifans, and will hit theaters on July 3, 2012.
