R&B Diva Gwen Guthrie Dead At 48

Dance and R&B diva Gwen Guthrie, best known for her 1986 hit "Ain't Nothing' Goin' On But The Rent," passed away last week of cancer.

The 48-year-old, New Jersey-based singer and songwriter, who also sang backing vocals on Madonna's 1983 self titled album, saw "Ain't Nothing' Goin' On But The Rent" go on to spawn the catch phrase "no romance without finance.

More recently, Guthrie's track was covered by Mya in the hook of Foxy Brown's song "Job" on her latest album "Chyna Doll." Ironically, Foxy's album debuted at number one on the Soundscan album chart the week of Guthrie's death.

Prior to Guthrie's solo success, she sang backing vocals for Aretha Franklin, and went on to work with Roberta Flack, Ben E. King, and Luther Vandross.

Guthrie, whose other club hits include "Padlock," "Seventh Heaven," and "It Should Have Been You," is survived by a brother and two daughters.
