The pairing of Damon and Elena from "The Vampire Diaries" is easily one of the most polarizing ships in any fandom. After all, Damon has killed, like, a bunch of people, and has frequently shown little regard for the people in Elena's life.

Matt, Jeremy, Jenna, Bonnie, and even Stefan at times were Damon's to manipulate for his own gain, and while his love for Elena has obviously changed Damon for the better and adjusted his attitude -- not just toward the people in her life, but toward human life in general -- it's sometimes hard to forgive his past misdeeds.

However, canon is as canon does, and there's no denying that Damon and Elena's chemistry is unlike any other couple on television.

Because Elena could probably use the cheering up as we enter season six, here's a sampling of some of the top moments in Delena shipper history:

This was a definitive moment for Delena shippers everywhere; with a simple dance, Damon and Elena proved that their relationship was electric (for better or for worse).

But then wiped her memory because he thought she deserved better -- deserved Stefan.

Damon broke up with the love of his life in the first half of season five because he thought he was doing her a favor, as he is wont to do. Oh, that Damon! Never one to pass up an opportunity to make Elena's choices for her.

Damon told Elena that he doesn't understand how she can love him given all the terrible things that he's done, and he made a pretty good argument, to be honest; he was unwilling to change Elena for the worse. Despite Elena's protests, they parted ways, and Ian Somerhalder's face made that heartbroken expression you see above. No, we're fine -- you're crying.

Of course, they got back together in the latter half of the season. However, that didn't make this moment any less emotional nor any less of an important moment for Damon for the relative selflessness inherent in the act.

11. That Time Elena Told Damon She Sees A Future With Him:

And then Damon told Elena: "I've seen it since the second I laid eyes on you." Aw.

Of course, Damon and Elena's touching reunion right before the season five finale would prove too good to be true. It seems as if their season of relative happiness was foreshadowing for the emotional onslaught that would follow.

17. ...To The Point That She Is Purposefully Hallucinating His Presence:

What Elena didn't consider in her brief reunion with Damon in "Promised Land" is that, worse than dying without him, would be living without him.

In an attempt to save Stefan and the others, Elena and Damon crossed over to The Other Side to bring them back. However, while Elena was able to return, Damon was left behind with Bonnie. As Elena sobbed hysterically, he told her from The Other Side: "You are by far the greatest thing that has ever happened to me...The fact that I got to die knowing I was loved is the epitome of a fulfilled life. It is never going to get better than this. I peaked."

No, we told you earlier -- you're crying.

We enter season six with a distraught Elena abusing some kind of witch drug that allows her to hallucinate her lost love. Normal stuff. Don't worry, Elena, nobody ever dies on "The Vampire Diaries!" Except for parents or parental figures. They die a lot.

And remember, ladies -- in real life, if your boyfriend once tried to murder your brother, you shouldn't date him, no matter how blue his eyes. (Yes, even if your brother was wearing a magical resurrection ring.)
