Hole Sued By Geffen Records For Breach Of Contract
As Courtney Love prepares for this weekend's Golden Globe Awards in Los Angeles, the Hole frontwoman and the band's lead guitarist, Eric Erlandson are now being sued by the group's label, Geffen Records, for breach of contract.
Geffen formally filed the lawsuit in a Los Angeles Superior Court on Wednesday, claiming that Hole still owes the label five albums under a recording contract the band signed in 1992, according to "Variety."
The record label, which has issued the last two Hole albums, "Live Through This" in 1994 and "Celebrity Skin" in 1998, has also asked for an injunction barring the band from signing with another company.
Hole issued its 1991 debut, "Pretty On The Inside," and a six-song EP, "Ask For It," in 1995 via the independent label Caroline Records.Doll Head Inc., which says that it now owns the services of Erlandson and Love, is seeking to nullify the agreement under a California labor law that places a seven-year limit on personalservice contracts.
Hole has been on semi-hiatus since completing a Canadian tour last July, as Love has been focusing on several acting projects. Bassist Melissa Auf Der Maur subsequently left the group back in October and has since become a touring member of the Smashing Pumpkins (see [article id="1430041"]"Hole Seeks New Bassist As Auf Der Maur Departs"[/article]).The band did contribute a new song, "Be A Man," to the soundtrack to Oliver Stone's professional football flick, "Any Given Sunday," which is currently number 32 on the "Billboard" album charts and has sold 100,000 copies in its first two weeks in stores.
