Marvel Movies Get New Release Dates: 'Thor', 'The Avengers' & 'Captain America' Delayed, 'Iron Man 2' Unchanged

In an official announcement made earlier this morning, Marvel announced a new schedule for its upcoming slate of films, with many of the projects delayed by a significant chunk of time. In fact, the film with the most forward movement lately, "Iron Man 2," is the only one to stick with its original release date (May 7, 2010). After the jump, check out the roundup of new release dates for Marvel movies and what to take from the revised schedule.

Here's how Marvel's upcoming movie lineup is looking:

- 'Iron Man 2' will stick to its May 7, 2010, release date.

- 'Thor' (directed by Kenneth Branagh) will land on the big screen June 17, 2011, almost a year later than its original release date of July 16, 2010.

- 'The First Avenger: Captain America' (directed by Joe Johnston) received a small bump in its release date and will hit theaters on July 22, 2011, instead of May 6, 2011.

- 'The Avengers' will now hit theaters May 4, 2012, instead of July 15, 2011.

What can we take from the re-shuffled schedule? Well, beyond the obvious questions regarding the studio's reason for pushing back so many films and any troubles that might have prompted the shift (though there was much eyebrow-raising when Marvel first announced the original, ambitious schedule), there are a few particular change-ups worth noting.

When the release dates were first announced, the time between "Captain America" and "The Avengers" amounted to just over two months, and there was some speculation that this was done to ensure that audiences would have an easier time connecting the former film's WWII-era hero to the modern story of "The Avengers."

It's also worth noting that "Thor" and "Captain America" will now hit theaters just over a month apart.

What do you think about the new Marvel movie schedule? Think there's not enough time between any films? Too much time? Sound off in the comment section!
