'Gilmore Girls' Star Edward Herrmann Dead At 71

The actor died of brain cancer in New York.

Emmy-winning actor and "Gilmore Girls" star Edward Herrmann died Wednesday (December 31) in a hospital in New York. He was 71 years old.

According to the Huffington Post, who confirmed Herrmann's death with his manager Robbie Kass, the actor died of brain cancer this morning in a New York hospital after battling the disease these past few months.

"Edward Herrmann, besides being an accomplished actor, he was also a true gentleman and a scholar, as well as being an incredibly kind and decent man. He will be sorely missed," Kass wrote in an email.

Herrmann was likely best known to all of us as Richard Gilmore, the wealthy, well-read father of Lorelei Gilmore (played by Lauren Graham) on the the hit early '00s TV show, "Gilmore Girls" -- recently released in its entirety on Netflix.

Herrmann also appeared in "The Practice," "The Wolf Of Wall Street," "The Aviator" and '80s cult classic "The Lost Boys," among many other films and TV shows.
