Mixmaster Marathon

Club DJs can thank DJ Muggs from Cypress Hill and Insane Mixaken for releasing a mix-CD that can cover them on their next extended smoke break. DJ Muggs' half of Kalifornication features heavyweights like Cypress Hill and Ghostface Killah, whose tracks alternate with choice two-minute excerpts from Killah Priest, Tragedy Khadafi and Xzibit. Muggs transitions deftly between tracks and generally lets them spin unadultered, rather than overpower the tracks with excessive manhandling.

Insane Mixaken breaks out of the gate with rapid-fire scratching over simultaneously running tracks on "Insane Intro." The track's shout-outs to the West Coast appropriately give way to the Snoop Dogg/Tha Eastsidaz track "Got Beef." On "Rafiki," by Zap Mama featuring Black Thought of The Roots, strategic scratches and pauses enhance a funky Latin vibe that lays an ideal platform for Black Thought's rap. Mixaken makes his presence felt by elongating jams with flawless turntablism and frequently displaying scratch proficiency at the beginnings of tracks. Noreaga's "Big Pun Tribute," which takes its melody from "Careless Whisper" by '80s group Wham, is especially meaningful considering the duo's past collaborations and Big Pun's passing.

The title of Kalifornication may be uninspired in light of the fact that the Red Hot Chili Peppers released Californication in 1999, but the execution more than makes up for it.
